Asian street markets are really diversified, with an assortment of different kinds of food items. This is the place where you can find food that you didn't even know can be eaten like exotic foodstuff. It really a great dining experience worth trying...

Hi All, We enjoyed Taiwan immensely, and I can't wait to go back. Those night markets are addictive! We spent five full days in Taipei (including most of a day trip to Danshui) and four full days in Kaohsiung (including the amazing Foguangshan Monastery). Wow. We would have had another full day there (possibly spent at Taroko Gorge), but our transpacific flight on the 17th was canceled, and we had to take another flight the following day. Had something like the oyster omelet minus the oyster. They called it asian pizza if I recall.

It was probably Okonomiyaki, often called Asian Pizza or Asian Pancake.

Very interesting! Went to a asian street market once in Vancouver BC. It was great. Had something like the oyster omelet minus the oyster. They called it asian pizza if I recall.

I'm definitely going, and Shilin is definitely on my itinerary. More suggestions are welcome--not just for Taipei, but also for Kaohsiung.

Thanks for the photos. Brings back memories from 15 years ago, when I attended a friend's wedding there. Had a blast trying all the different restaurants & sites. I loved the nite markets.

Oh, man. Makes me long for my old backpacking days through SE Asia. Loved the night stalls and street vendors, even if I barely knew what I was eating half the time.

Thanks for sharing. These photos remind me of the port visits to Hong Kong and Phataya Beach and Subic Bay back when I was in the navy. It amazes me how there is so much available and how inexpensive and delishous everything is. Ah for the bygone days of staggering back to the boat at three in the morning with a fistfull of mystery meat on a stick, munching all the way to the pier.

I've been to The Shilin Night Market in Taipei. It's the largest one in Taiwan with over 500 Food Stalls plus all the other merchandise you can imagine.
I Had a "Local" business friend with me to help me buy a gold necklace for my Bride. That in itself was a fascinating experience. To watch her work her magic negotiating skills was poetry in motion. I wanted to bring her home with me to help me buy my next Car! Can't remember what we ate but it was exotic I know that much.
After business hours at 1-2AM in the morning, many Vendors set up little alters by placing flowers, lighting candles and incense before a Buddha-image or some other symbol of the presence of the Buddha and they make a food offering. That in itself was interesting to watch. The vivid images of the whole experience are clearly imbedded in my mind.
