I'kk take a ride down there this weekend and try to find out and report back. My GUESS is they originated in Akron & then migrated out here. Probably sold the shop and name when they left.

Right, but the article doesn't say anything about a chain of Mary Coyles; it just mentions Akron and Phoenix.

There is a Mary Coyle's in Akron which visit every time I am in town. The interior resemblance to Tom's Inc Cream Bowl in Zanesville OH got me wondering if both places are the remnants of an old chain. And now I hear of a Mary Coyle's in Phoenix. Anyone know the history?

It's more than just"The Economy" that's percipitating their Demise. Their neighborhood is in decline and deteriorating with a rise of lower income residents. There's been other Upscale Ice Cream Shops open in better sections of the valley. People don't go "downtown" to shop and go to the movies anymore. While there has been improvements in the Downtown area, their area is going the other direction. like many other old downtowns, merchants need to move or die.
