MiamiDon; no, we wrote nothing for Gourmet before they asked us to write a story about a diner (O'Rourke's), which they liked so much that they hired us to do the column. Hap Townes was the first that ran. I believe the O'Rourke's column was a few months later.

I, too, enjoyed the Roadfood contributions in Gourmet for many years. When they decided to quit, and offered B.A.,, I said B-A-A!, and quit the whole bunch. There's plenty of material on line to satisfy me, first and foremost my daily fix of Roadfood.

I subscribed to gourmet for many years, and it got to the point where the first thing I always read was the Road column. Definitely allowed me to vicariously travel and eat in a way I had never done before.

My wife and I happened to pick up a fairly complete collection of Gourmet (and Bon Appetit) going back into the late 1980's (a Craigslist freebee, the guy was going to toss them if could find a taker).

I was tempted to find, cut-out, and bind all the Stern's Roadfood articles. Now I know where to start looking.

It is a lot of them! Gourmet was a lovely place to work. We started writing monthly in 1994 (first story: meat and three at Hap Townes in Nashville). At that time our column was usually 3000-4000 words. As time went on, attention-spans shortened (as did revenues and page counts) and by the end, we were lucky to get 800-1000 words. Of course, now you can read us regularly in the wonderful Saveur.

MiamiDon, you are correct. I was so excited to find this that I posted it using the word "All". I shall have to edit that. I wish that Michael Stern could tell us a way to find every article that they have written for Gourmet. It would be great rereading them.

Are you sure that is all the Stern's articles? I seem to think they were writing for Gourmet for a much longer time.
