use to run up and back to columbia s.c. alot from south florida alone , i would buy 4 bbq sandwiches from my favorite place up there and double foil them and put in safe places around engine, when hungry pop the hood and grab one.........or two

A somewhat similar way of heating food that some of you really old-timers may remember:
When I was young (60 to 70 years ago) and my folks and I went on a day-long trip (many times to put flowers on ancestors' graves in area cemeteries), instead of stopping to eat lunch at a restaurant, we would pack a picnic lunch. Almost every time, we would take a can of some vegetable (usually pork and beans) and about an hour before we were going to eat, my father would place it on the car manifold. When we got to the spot we were going to eat, we would open the can and have hot pork and beans to eat with our lunch!

Living in AZ, The Mexican population celebrate Dia de los Muertos, "The Day of the Dead" by visiting the graves of deceased family members and/or remembering them by erecting alters and giving offerings.
I drive by a cemetary frequently and observe families having a picnic lunch at a gravesite

pretty much the same thing-foodbme. After 32 years, Bob challenges me to make "hot tar kettle"food.He is out of luck.One of his other favorites, along with what I mentioned, was cut up potatoes, onions, green peppers and butter in foil, on the kettle.

Bob was in the roofing business for many years, and honestly they would put a brown paper bag on the hot tar kettle and watch it pop 10 minutes later. They also used to wrap fresh corn on the cob in foil and cook it the same way.He said it was the best food he ever had.

When I was a kid my family used to make "Pitch Potatoes." We would drop potatoes into a bucket of hot pitch, don't remember how long they cooked but it wasn't very long, use a rake to take them out and put on newspapers to cool. Once cool and brittle, hit the pitch to break it open, like cracking an egg. Remove the potatoes , lather with butter and enjoy! They were the best potatoes I've ever eaten
