One of my favorite breakfasts growing up. Thanks to my late aunt Shirley. I don't know how she did it but she made them like...velvet.

Are there any of you who grew up in NYC and are old enough to remember that wonderful smell from inside any old fashioned Jewish appetizing store in NYC?
I remember that wonderful smell coming from all the pickled products more than anything else. Oy, if they could only could have bottled that wonderful smell.

The most interesting thing I found out in the article is that Alan Dell appears to have passed along ownership of Katz's to his son. I had no idea.

I have had the good fortune to interact with Mr. Dell (left) on a number of occasions. He was always great with his customers - telling stories and being an all-around "mensch." I hope that Jake is able to carry on the family business with as much panache as his father.

Pigiron, how would you compare Russ and Daughter's to Barney Greengrass (The Sturgeon King)? I've only been to Russ and Daughter's, but have heard good things about Barney Greengrass (not including Sienfeld episodes )

I think of Barney Greengrass as a sit-down restaurant (although their takeout counter is a mob scene too). I go there for the best LEO I've ever had. The sturgeon and eggs is equally sublime.

Both Barney Greengrass and R&D are absolute gems, and should be high on anyone's bucket list.

A couple of years ago we took a long weekend in NYC and went to Katz's, Russ and Daughter's and Yonah Schimmel for the trifecta. All were excellent, but Russ and Daughter's and Yonah Schimmel stood out, as there's nothing comparable in the People's Republic of Maryland.

We went to a 9-11 exhibit near the Meatpacking District by the photographer that was allowed in with 1st responders, and beforehand, we stopped at Murray's Bagels which we thought was pretty good, and definitely boiled and baked.

Hard to miss R&D when visiting Katz's.

In NE Philly, we had Abe's Appetizers on Bustleton Avenue. Just fish,cheese and salads- no meats. Next door was Brooklyn Bagels. Both places were packed on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings.

Been there literally hundreds of times. It's an amazing place. When you were visiting Katz's and Yonah Schimmel, you were literally standing in front of Russ and Daughters!

Simply put, it's the best appetizing store in NY, perhaps the country. When I was a kid, appetizing stores were about as plentiful as delis: there was one just about in every town in the NY metro area. They started disappearing about 20 years ago. For the most part, "appetizing" has moved into bagel shops and high end gourmet stores, but even then, it's hard to find the good stuff. For about a decade, I lived across the street from Ess-A-Bagel on 21st street. They have fantastic lox and a small sampling of smoked fish, but NOTHING in comparison to Russ and Daughters. R&D has a phenomenal selection of herring, whitefish, smoked trout, caviar, probably a dozed different types of lox...it's like a candy store for me. It's an absolute gem.

The downside (and you knew this was coming): it's painfully expensive. Regular Nova has crossed the $35 per pound mark. A whole whitefish costs about $45. And my favorite item of food on earth: smoked sliced sturgeon, is over $50 per pound. When I was a kid, we ate this stuff every single Sunday morning, and we were poor! Those days are long gone. Now that I'm in the suburbs, I get my lox at Fairway (it's very good) and I only buy the other stuff about once a year...and it's always from R&D. Now if I can just find a freaking halfway decent bagel!!

I was reading this article about the disappearing delis of NYC, and learned that the old natural companion to a kosher delicatessen was an "appetizing store" that offered fish and dairy products. The oldest remaining one is Russ & Daughters which was founded in 1914 and is right down the street from Katz's Delicatessen. I wish that I had known this when I visited Katz's and Yonah Schimmel's. Has anyone been there?
