I for one don't know why some get so worked up over this. Does not bother me. Now lets talk about that Indiana (and other Mid-West states) that put spaghetti in their chili. Not on it as in Cincinnati style but in the chili.

I'm with you...If ya gotta serve beens then please put them in a bowl on the side...

Putting beans in chili is like putting Jello in yer shoes...it might seem funny at first, but soon regretted...

I never care for beans in my chili. My big concern is always how much onion and garlic to use. I always say the more the better.. The other concern of course is how hot and spicy to make it. I just made my first chili with small chunks of pork and kielbasi with loads of onions and garlic and it was received well..over bow tie pasta.

Seriously, I think the beans take something away from the overall taste of the chili. It's comparable to what an extra large bun will do to a hamburger: it takes away from the overall taste.

In my experience, beans might add texture to the mastication of eating the meal, but they soften the overall impact of what the spices do to the tongue. However, there are some chili concoctions where beans are actually welcome to tone down the chili's hotness; so I can see both sides of the issue. It really depends on the recipe.

Interesting replies. I think the better question might be will you eat chili with beans? I know most formal chili cook-offs are 'no bean' but some local fundraiser ones have any and all different recipes.

Saying chili with beans is not chili is, IMO like saying a vodka martini is not a martini (though I tend to agree with the latter ) Texas Chili Cook-Offs notwithstanding..

When I make chili, I use both stew meat cut into small pieces and ground beef. I tend to use dark red kidney beans, but will use both dark and red.

I like chili with or without beans, but I'm kind of a wuss and don't like it too spicy.

I like them all. Chili with beans, without beans, beans on the side. I love beans so for me that is the best part of chili. Especially Bushie's beans!

I prefer beanless chili. However, I'll overlook the beans if it's good chili. (Exception: Hot dog chili should always be beanless. Beans, like ketchup, simply don't belong on a dog.)

chili is so rich, imho it has to go >with< something.... to me, eating a bowl of beanless chili is like eating a bowl of sausage gravy.................

beanless chili over rice or cornbread, sure.
beanless chili on nachos or a hot dog, sure.

I always figured beans in chili were a means of stretching it to feed more people when you were too poor to afford more meat...much like putting elbow macaroni in goulash. Which means chili always has beans where I come from, because we didn't have much money at all when I was growing up.

However, beans or no beans is not a deal-breaker for me either way. If it's got beans, I'll eat them. If it doesn't have beans, I'll still eat it. But they better not skimp on the meat if they refuse to use beans.

The old saw is "anyone who knows beans about chili knows that chili doesn't have any beans" and I tend to agree.

However my wife sometimes adds beans to a chili and I am not one to correct her cooking.

Of course there are beans in my chili. My great uncle was president of the Michigan Bean Company, and to this day they make the Jack Rabbit Beans brand. So I grew up with beans in everything.

According to my Texas friends, if you want chili with beans, you cook them separately and then mix them. When I make chili from scratch, I NEVER use beans.

I use good quality chuck roast and I cut my "Chunks" to about the size of a grape. They cook down a little smaller and become as tender as can be when cooked low & slow. Add much more texture and flavor to the Chili than ground beef.
Ground chuck's ok if you're in a hurry.

I definitely prefer beans but it's not a deal breaker either way.. Don't want to waylay the thread but my wife is very picky about chili, can't stand chunks of meat, only likes ground meat.

I too actually prefer my chili with (coarse) ground meat rather than "chunks".
