(ken8038)

<<Ken, what slice joint do you prefer in Manhattan?

My favorite had always been Ray's Famous on 6th Ave & 11th Street. I'd been going there every few months for nearly 30 years, but unfortunately they closed last year. Right now you might say I'm a man without a slice joint.

Actually my favorite NY Pizzas are all in "no slices" places anyway so I don't really miss not having a go-to slice joint. My favorites are Johns on Bleecker St, Lombardi's, and Lazzara's (sort of an unknown place that I love, link below, it's hidden away in an upstairs location in the garment district).
http://lazzaraspizza.com/html/home.php

Re:EVERY Slice Joint in Manhattan! (MiamiDon)

ken8038

I'm bumping this thread yet again because the other day I found myself near Penn Station late in the day and decided to have a slice at the blog's #1 place, Pizza Suprema. Very friendly and accomodating help (which alone puts in the Top 10% of NY Slice joints). My slice came off a pie right out of the oven, so it was totally fresh.

My verdict: Very good crispy crust, very large slice for $3. But to me the sauce and cheese were better than average, but just not near the best there is in NY. Overall, maybe a B+. I guess everyone has different taste in Pizza.

Just to be sure, I got 2 slices to go, to bring home to my wife and son. Their verdict: Even less. Maybe a B.

One thing he did get right. I then stopped in Penn Station at Rosie's Pizza for a 20 oz. take out container of craft beer for only $4, and enjoyed it while waiting for my train. That's the best beer deal in NY!

Ken, what slice joint do you prefer in Manhattan?

Re:EVERY Slice Joint in Manhattan! (ken8038)

Not to keep going dwelling on this guys reviews, but I've been going thru some of them and he's really a hoot, and lots of his opinions and wisecracks are spot on. One thing he points out it that any place with "New York" in the name (eg: New York Pizza), means that 1) The people who are behind it are not from New York, and 2) they don't know the first thing about New York Pizza.

He also hates pretentious places, like this one, called "Slice, the Perfect Food". This has to go down in the Hall of Fame of Pizza reviews:
http://www.sliceharvester.com/2010/11/slice-perfect-food-terrifying-glimpse.html
Re:EVERY Slice Joint in Manhattan! That's still fairly true. A single fare subway ride is $2.50, a standard slice is usually $2.75 to $3 in Manhattan but in the outer boroughs there's still plenty of $2.50 slices. (forget the $1 places, that's not pizza).

Hey, I never thought of it that way. Yes, it was about 1964 and the subway token was 15 cents. But that was when there were 2 fare zones, not like today. How does that skew the equation?
Re:EVERY Slice Joint in Manhattan! (ken8038)

Somehow I never came across this guy's blog over the past two years, but suddenly he's getting a lot of press for having completed his goal of eating a slice of pizza from all 362 slice joints in Manhattan.

This article from the NY Daily News has links to his blog and a list of his 5 favorites. For what it's worth, I must have passed his favorite (Pizza Suprema at 8th Ave and 31 st) a hundred times in the days when I rode the NJ Transit from Penn Station and never once did I even think to go in. Who knew??

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/man-eats-pizza-slice-joint-manhattan-colin-hagendorf-eats-362-slices-craves-article-1.1000241

none other than the Wall Street Journal has picked up on it too:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203935604577064641987645430.html
