Glad to hear they will continue. Out here, Albertsons carries a large variety of their products and it's the only reason I go to Albertsons. (Unless Cokes are on sale)

I am on the mailing list for Doogie's and according to the message I got this morning, they will be back with their two-foot hot dogs on March 7. Which is most definitely good news. But, according to this article from the Hartford Courant, Doogie's will be using a different vendor than Grote & Weigel's. So, how will the customers respond to the change? Should be interesting.

Hooray! This is almost as good as Jeremy Lin's rescue of the Knicks. Well, not quite. In any case, it'll be interesting to see which purveyors stay with G & W and which will nevertheless move on to another dog. Always nice to see an institution saved, especially if it's something important, such as Democracy or Hot Dogs. This calls for a frank.

Indeed, very sad. And, indeed, interesting. I think the best choice for those New Jersey Texas Weiner joints using the Grote & Weigel pork/beef would be a pork/beef Thumann's suitable for the grill. However, I suspect this dog is more expensive than the analogous G & W.

Insofar as Father & Son, Linden, N.J., well, they're the only frankfurter emporium in N.J. I know of using the all-beef natural casing Grote & Weigel, a very fine dog in the East Coast deli, all beef tradition. I think their best choice would be a Best Provision (Newark), all beef, natural casing, eight to a pound, or the Hatfield all-beef n/c meant to compete in that segment. Of course, Boar's Head, n/c all beef 8's would be good, too, but, I again surmise, more expensive.

Thanks for the link. This was also mentioned on Hot Dog Nation's Facebook page. Grote & Weigel's standard griddle frank is used at practically all of the Plainfield area Texas Weiner joints that grill (rather than deep fry like the Paterson area joints) their dogs. Galloping Hill Inn in Union gets their franks from G&W but it is a different recipe frank that was from Gaiser's butcher shop. Galloping Hill Inn has the recipe so it will be interesting to see if they have someone else make it or switch to another dog. There are always people trying to get the GHI to switch to their dogs or offer to make the dogs for them.

Father & Son in Linden also uses a beef dog from Grote & Weigel.

Unfortunately, it's true. I just received an e-mail from Grote and Weigel, and they are shutting down production next Tuesday. So much for a long standing product. We are all at risk because of this wonderful global economy.

Are you certain? I have not been able to find any info/news story to corroborate that. That's it? No buyout, nothing? It's one of the oldest meat packers in the country. If nothing else, it'll cause a lot of shuffling by the Texas Weiner purveyors in N.J. Oh, say it ain't so.

I just received an email from Doogie's/The Clam Digger that reads (in part) as follows:

After 120 years, Grote & Weigel is shutting down immediately. We will no longer be able to provide the two foot hot dog. However, I have already tested 4 meat packers to find the best possible dog for Doogie's and The Clam Digger, with hopes of retaining a 16 inch dog. I will keep you posted.
