Todat 4/13, in 1852, F.W. Woolworth was born. His 5 & 10 Cent stores are not remembered for their merchandise but everyone remembers the Lunch Counter and it's #! seller---Grilled Cheese!!
Many also remember the wonderful aroma of the Peanuts cooking at the Nut Counter and the creeky wooden floors.

I love both of them! First:
National Licorice Day
Most licorice on the candy rack contains no actual licorice. The natural licorice flavor--similar to those of fennel or anise--comes from the root of a European plant. It contains, in addition to the distinctive taste, a compound called glycyrrhizin--the sweetest natural substance on earth. It's being used in a new kind of artificial sweetener that hasn't quite been perfected yet. Licorice is more widely used in drugs and herbal medicine than in cooking.

My favorite is Austrailian Licorice sold in stores with bulk bins.
