Durgin Park in Boston was known for backtalk from cranky waitresses but I understand they've gone to politeness. That's no fun. The fun was trying to figure out how they were going to insult you! Haven't been there in years but do remember the surly waitresses

So sad to hear about the closing of Sam Wo.

Can anyone list for me two or three alternative restaurants to Sam Wo? I am looking for similar food choices and good Sam Wo prices. Prefer a San Francisco location, but not necessarily Chinatown.

Edsel Ford Fung was a real character. If you became a "regular", he could be very kind. At one point, my girlfriend and I visited Sam Wo and were treated to a viewing of his scrapbook of his newspaper clippings. Occasionally, I would see Edsel in the Portsmouth Square Plaza (on his day off), just down the hill from the restaurant. Miss those days...

Fung died in 1984 at age 57, but for a long time a sign listing the restaurant's house rules maintained his gruff demeanor. Among its warnings: "No Booze ... No Jive, No Coffee, Milk, Soft Drinks, Fortune Cookies." ( No Clean, no fix anything, no care about safety, just take money and run) .............................

The "guy"died some years ago. His rudeness was sort of a drawing card. Kind of like at Lindy's years ago when you got your cheesecake with an insult..
