Whatever you do, do not fall for musical theater in Niagara Falls. If you are desperate in Niagara Falls late at night, there is Halal Indian Buffet which is actually really good.

Grew up near Buffalo and Rochester. I heartily second the recommendation for Scwabls. But they are not the only place in the Buffalo area. Beef on Weck is a delicious local specialty. A mound of roast beef au jus with horseradish on a kummelweck roll: basically a hard roll with salt crystals and caraway seeds on top. Rochester is the home of white hot dogs, spicier than red but not brats.

Hi all

I'm very excited about a road trip I am taking with my fiance! Here is our plans:

1 - We will be leaving Springfield, Missouri and travelling on 1-44 through St. Louis and through Illinois and Indiana on 1-70 to arrive at our first destinaton Dayton, Ohio (where my fiance is from).

2 - Next we are heading North and East towards Niagara Falls, New York through I 75 North, 30 East, and I 71 North to I 90 until we get to Niagara Falls area. We are taking the route along Lake Erie so we might stop there for the night.

3 - Next destination is Cooperstown, New York to see the Baseball Hall of Fame :) taking 1-90 South and 290.

4 - Next destination is the Beach! Unfamiliar with the area but York, Maine seemed to be a decent area for a beach so heading east near Albany, New York and I-90 through Massachussetts and Worchester then North towards York, Maine on I-290 and I-495 and I- 95.

5 - On the drive back we are stopping in Hartford, CT and then heading west back through Scranton, Pa and I 80 until we get back to Ohio.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated for good roadfood places to eat! Sick of fast food places. We are will to drive off the path a bit if the food is worth it.

Guys, the I-90/NYS Thruway portion of your trip abounds with classic hot dogs and other RF -

Rochester is not only the home of the infamous Nick Tahou Garbage Plate(tm), but also has the wonderful LDR Char Pit, which has superior steak sandwiches and what Rochesterarians calls grounds - fresh made burgers that melt in the mouth. A big plus is that a block away from LDR is an outlet of the superior local Abbott's Custard chain.

Syracuse has a great hot dog joint called Heide's, which also is a easy detour off the Thruway.

Troy has the hole in the wall lunch counter, Famous Lunch, which has tiny little dogs with a great sauce.

Cooperstown, for some reason does not have much in the way of real local food - no chains, but nothing special either. And a warning: do NOT go to Cooperstown the week before the Induction ceremonies OR on a Monday anytime in the summer - the Induction week is self explanatory, but the Mondays thing is because there is a HUGE baseball complex nearby, and a large softball complex close by also, and both of them have tournaments all summer where Monday is an 'off' day, and the kids get discounted tickets to the HOF museum....

On the way back, there's not much on I84 between Hartford and Scranton - just The Sycamore Drive In in Bethel, the Red Rooster Drive in in North Brewster. Theres also a couple of Texas Weiner joints in Newburgh, and The Coney Island in Middletown - which has a sauce different that the Texas Weiner sauce - more the Greek type drier sauce.

In Scranton they have TWO lunch spots called Coney Island within a block of each other. Both serve Teas Weiners, but the one on Lackawanna is the original family that moved out their original location - and which the newer immediately moved into. The original people have a quite exhaustive website detailing how THEY are the true original. Google 'Coney Island Lunch' an click on the one on Lackawanna Ave.

Couple of choices in Niagara Falls are Ted's Hot Dogs, there is one quite close to the falls, you can google it. Or a beef on weck at Schwabl's in Buffalo.
