I agree with you. The notion that Hoboken is a "clam town" goes way back. Clam Broth House was est. in 1899. Biggie's est. 1946. Back in the day (way way way back) clams were something local...and very inexpensive. Not today...but the fierce (stubborn) loyalty to traditions means we gotta have the clams. Especially when they are sort of the last clam standing.

When you are a reality show star that showcases the establishment...you get the pick of the bushel or bucket.

Thanks for that link. I wasn't impressed with Biggies the one time I went. We were saying it should have been called "Smallies", as in the size of their clams. The ones they shucked in the video look like they were 3x the size of what we got. Maybe they've got two sizes: One size for TV shows, and one size for the rest of us.

One other old school place I just remembered about is Leo's Grandview. I haven't eaten there in about 10 years, and haven't heard a word about it in years so I just did a search. I'm amazed that they are still in business in 2012, so it might be worth a lunch or dinner stop. It's about as old school as it gets, right down to their love of a certain blue-eyed Hoboken Native who used to dine there even before he was famous.

I agree that Pilsner Haus is really good. Plus there is the added bonus of the fact that street parking is fairly easy to find in that area, unlike further downtown.

One place that hasn't been mentioned it Piccolo's. The aren't many Old Time Hoboken places left anymore, but that's one of them. Great cheesteaks.

Yes...the Pier is very very close to the Terminal. When you hit the street just walk towards the right...and your right there. Right.

Thanks for the Hoboken movie nights link, Slugworth, uh, I mean CC!! I've already marked some on my calendar and started mapping out places to eat! Is it the PATH train that drops off a few blocks away from Pier A? If so, it'd be super convenient for me to get there from World Trade.

Pilsener Haus created a GREAT place...from an idle old building.. So...double credit for them.

Roll out that barrel!! The first brewery in the United States...was in <<<Hoboken>>>

Movies under the stars is a free event held every Wednesday night for most of the summer. Excellent views of Manhattan and you can gather up all of the Roadfood goodies <<<Hoboken>>> has to offer...and have a picnic.

For Pizza I'd recommend Margherita's, a BYOB Italian cafe that gets noisy when crowded http://www.margheritascafe.com/ or

I'd also recommend the Elysian Cafe. A nice menu with a full bar and one of the better places on for Washington Street sidewalk seating. http://www.elysiancafe.com/
The only places I can think of offhand for fried chicken are Oddfellows by the Path train, with it's cajun menu (which you'd only consider if it wasn't anywhere near happy hour or later) or Maxwells. And while I love Maxwells for rock and roll reasons, the food can be wildly uneven. It's bar food and when it's on it's just fine, but I've had some less than okay meals there. If your family is fun and you want to experience the quirky offbeat vibe of <<<Hoboken>>> you can go to Dozzino...for excellent modern pizza and a nice game of Bocce. 'Tis the season. Not many people get that at one seating in one setting.

For GREAT pizza, try Benny Tudino's at 622 Washington Street. Ate there last summer......GIANT pie(I think over 20 inches)...ads call it the largest pie in the state..two slices are like 4-5 any place else....and it was delicious. Check other posts here, and on the internet, It's fun, just to see that pie coming out of the oven!!!!!

Was thinking about a day trip there since it's close to Long Island. Are there any standouts? Me and the fam are interested in just about any kind of food leaning towards sandwiches, pizza, and fried chix. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
