Route 11

Staunton is the restaurant town. I had a great brunch at Mockingbird Cafe a few weekends ago.

True. I was teaching at Mary Baldwin when Staunton finally decided to legalize liquor-by-the-drink back in the mid-70's. That led to a "boom" in the restaurant business that continues today. Staunton's nickname: "The Queen of the Shenandoah Valley" is well-deserved.

This conversation needs a little representation from an authentic Waynesboroan. To get a true culinary experience, you need to spend a day in each of the 5 Waynesboros in the United States. I made such a trip several Thanksgivings ago, during my trip to see family. I ate in local places in each Waynesboro, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and back home in Virginia. What a sample of small-town America...

Alas, Waynesboro does not yet have enough local restaurants. Since 2004, when the arrival of our Wal-Mart occurred, we gained a large selection of national chain restaurants, like Cracker Barrel, Outback Steakhouse, Ruby Tuesday, etc., but it is the local kind that makes a place unique. My favorite restaurant in Waynesboro would be Stone Soup Books & Cafe. Excellent soups, lots of locally-grown veggies, grilled salmon on the patio was unbelievable and the musicians that play there on Friday evenings make it an even better evening. Stop by 908 West Main Street, after you wipe all that apple butter off your hiney.

Waynesboro ain't bad, and we're a dang sight better than Howardsville!

I tried to visit Waynesboro once. I was TTM'd at the edge of town, used the bypass, and never gave the town a second chance.

We then picniced at Hungry Mother State Park and kept moving South.

Apparently, the spam flagger believes Route 11 has hung around here for nine years and posted more than 700 times just so he/she could litter the boards here today with sarcastic, satirical comments about Waynesboro.

OK. Our August trip to Mississippi is off. We're heading to Waynesboro. I can't want to try the apple butter slide.

My friends there is an exotic place in Virginia where you can have your fill of food, fun and culture. Waynesboro is home to thousands and tourists who seek to enjoy the delightful tropical weather.

In the town square on holidays they spread thousands of gallons of apple butter on Slip n'Slides and everyone takes their turn sliding down toward the river. Afterward, everyone repairs to Applebees to eat such native dishes as "Sizzlin Steak Fajitas" and "Fiesta Salad" and "French Onion Soup".

When summer comes you can find many fly fishing on the North River, where you can win a prize for hooking the largest dead body. Last year, Ed "Shifty" Shifflett caught a 250 lb. transient and was awarded with a free night at the Deluxe Budget Motel, which is near Kmart and Big Lots for all your shopping needs.

How about that shopping! Excitement comes for everyone when you peruse our fine craft stores on Main Street. Both are within ten feet of each other. They have all your scrapbooking supplies!

Waynesboro is a town on the go and full of all kinds of surprises! Visit us and stay at one of our lovely lodging properties and eat at our delicious Cracker Barrel, awarded with many awards.
