Some of the best food I have consumed in my life has been in the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont.

Maybe I'm wrong, but when Patrick O'Connell's Inn at Little Washington first came to national note in the 1970's the whole area food scene - including Washington, D.C.'s - kicked it up a notch.

We stopped in Winchester on Saturday June 30 due to the severe storms that ripped through the region. As always, we wanted to find a place to eat that was unique to the area. Amherst Diner did not disappoint. They were unusually busy due to the storm but did a great job managing it. The food was great. I got the pork chops and eggs and Ellen got the Blueberry pancakes and sausage. Like a good diner, they serve breakfast all day. Love this place.
