Iowa's Kirk Ferentz is the most overpaid coach for what he delivers at a rate close to a million dollars per win this year.

There may have been some turmoil between Bielema and Barry Alvarez behind the scenes. Bielema may have wanted bigtime SEC style money for his assistants who eventually left, or he may have wanted a super lopsided contract like Kirk Ferentz has at Iowa.

Bielema was a total killer for teams like Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, and Illinois. He cried on the field after finally beating Iowa in 2010, played .500 against the other top seven teams the conference, and won one out of six against Ohio State. The close game losses on hail mary passes or overtime periods could have been karma for the 70 point beatdowns on the weaker teams.

Bielema had been making last minute plane flights to top tier quarterbacks across the country in the last days of recruiting for the past several years. All but one basically turned him down. You could see the potential when the team had one great athletic NFL ready guy running the offense. The other guys over the years were awkward kids dedicated to the program, living within the system, destined for NFL backup jobs at best.

Does he really think he is going to get the talent to play even with the big programs in the SEC West? Arkansas once fired a coach overnight after a loss, had fans rebel and dig into the personal life of Houston Nutt, then had an offseason fiasco with Bobby Petrino, and John L. Smith having some bizarro press conference where he screams at reporters about football being fun and just a game because Smith just had a family member die and is going through financial trouble.

You saw the potential of Wisconsin in the Nebraska game the way they should have been the whole season. They have the running backs and the big line. What did them in was going through three quarterbacks over the season, coaching firing a few games in and just not quite jelling. But who knows what will happen in the Rose Bowl. Their head coach, Bret Bielema is bolting for Arkansas.

Wisconsin was a shocker. they lost to both OSU and PSU, but still go to B1G Championship and unbelievably crush Nebraska. wow. I would guess that they'll get stomped in the Rose Bowl...but I won't make that prediction again!

I do know that there was a meeting in New Albany of the very highest principals in the matter the night before the Tressel resignation. What was said and/or decided at that meeting I do not, of course, know. Did Tressel "take the bullet" in the matter? I can't say. Did this year's team get hit by the bullet? You bet. Is it fair? I don't think so. By the way, I also don't think it's fair that the Penn State team has to suffer for something the players were not a part of.

I think it was wrong to let them take a ban instead of firing everyone that knew. Sandusky's wife should be locked up also. That whole city took a huge hit because of those pigs. I would have cleared house. They did not even scratch the surface. We will never know how many people turned there heads on that one. The people who knew still work there. I agree with you on this one the players did nothing. They should change the name of the college and start over....Russ

I hate the Irish for one reason: THEIR COACH!!!

He came to U.C. and turned around an under performing team into a Big East leader in short work. Then he makes his speech about how he LOVES U.C. and would never go anywhere else. Then 3 days later he announces he is going to become the head coach at ND. RIGHT BEFORE U.C. went to play in the Orange Bowl.

Well, you certainly must know Tressel well for him to tell you what he was doing, why he was doing it and what he was planning for his future.

I said it was just my opinion. That's all. I guess its possible he went to the front office and told them. They might have asked him to take the bullet. If so he should have called them on it when it meant his reputation. Why is it so difficult to do the right thing instead of cheating? Why do people defend actions like this and try to make arguments for doing things wrong? Then when they do get caught they will always say someone else did something worse. Wrong is Wrong. Again just my opinion. The only story we have been told is this one. He has never defended his actions. I respect your opinion Michael. But don't you wish he wouldn't have done it now? Are you a little pissed at him and the organization? After about 8 games I saw this situation coming. For some reason they just kept winning. There is nothing better than two great historical teams undefeated going for the National Title. Especially those two.

First, it was his players from that 2002 team who organized the entire affair and refused to participate if Tressel had not been included, and it was his players who hoisted him on their shoulders. Second, what Tressel did was what virtually any coach would have done, will do, and does. He just got caught. And when it came to the seniors on this years team, they all expressed their love and admiration for Tressel.

He knew the rules, he turned his head, and he did nothing. He is paid big dollars to make sure things like this don't happen. A quick walk down the hall to the legal dept. and everyone comes out clean. His reputation is clean. Instead he turned his head in hopes of an undefeated season and National Title. Because had he said something suspensions would have happened and he would have lost some good players. Thus the perfect season and title are lost. Instead he rolled the dice and screwed the future players out of a National Title against Notre Dame. Took the penalty thinking he would roll up to the NFL. That has not happened yet. Hindsight he might have done something different. As to other coaches doing the same thing. Sure there are cheats in every line of work but most would not do it and it certainly is no argument to doing the right thing. I tried that everyone else does it on my Father when I was about 11 and he set me straight. If you don't do anything wrong you never have to worry about getting caught....Russ

Add what you wish. The fact is any coach of a major college will do something similar if he feels the need to do so.

Why, did you know that until not too many years ago many football players at major colleges were actually barred by their coaches from attending classes for fear they might fail a course and become ineligible? And, did you know that back then foorball players often paying jobs for which they were never required to show up, except to pick up their paychecks? And I speak from experience.

As to whether I'd say what I said about Tressel had he been Michigan's coach, you're wrong.

Somehow I doubt if Tressel was a Michigan coach that you would say, ...what Tressel did was what virtually any coach would have done, will do, and does. He just got caught, unless of course, lying and cheating is the new moral standard we should all condone. But if you insist, let's add stupid to him since he got caught.

What was honored was the team that won the 2002 national title. Tressel was the coach of that team. It was proper and fitting that he be among the honorees.

While I agree with honoring the 2002 team. Carrying off Tressel on the shoulders In My Opinion was too much. I always wonder how many other offenses he looked the other way on. I am not a big fan of OSU. I wont taint this thread with an attack on Ohio State. Looking forward to Notre Dame winning the National Title....Russ

A Notre Dame - OSU Game would have been interesting.
Coach of the Year should go to O'Brien of Penn State. Did a great job considering the circumstances.
And the Seniors on that team deserve recognition of some kind.

Just ordered our BCS Championship Game tickets. Of course, we are at the back of a long line that starts with people who have buildings named after them, then major donors, then former players, then famous alumni, then season ticket holders, then non-famous alumni, then faculty, then employees, then current students, then parents of current students (Mrs and Mrs Mosca). At least we are ahead of parents of former students (who don't have their names on buildings, aren't former players or season ticket holders, etc)!

Even if we get them, it's 50/50 that we'll keep them or sell them for a profit. That's an expensive trip.
