To me, this smells with an underhanded way to get out of paying a higher, tenured salary and retirement benefits on a long term employee who's number was going to be up soon.

Bank employees are tenured?
If someone is fired they will not earn additional retirement credits, but they can not be denied credits they have already accrued.

The government wouldn't have cared about this guy. Wells Fargo made a show of this to demonstrate what it wants to portray as the foolishness of the regs. This is all on WF's head, not the feds, and anyway, you can be sure this will all work out in the employee's favor once WF's point is made and the public attention turns elsewhere.

If he's suing them as part of a class action suit, I seriously doubt they're trying to reinstate him. I haven't read any other accounts, but they aren't specifically speaking about reinstatement of his previous job, just working with the gov't to review his so-called record of financial crime. I'm sure their if it were so, their PR people would be forcing the issue in communications to the press that they were doing all they could to get him back. This is a PR nightmare and believe me, if it were so, that would be target message they would be getting out rather then the "we had no choice" message.

It's scum like this thief that are a cancer to the entire banking system. It's people like him who are to blame for tanking the economy. Good thing they terminated him and all the rest of his ilk. Maybe now the bank CEOs will have the freedom to worry about important things, like increasing their bonuses. This termination is guaranteed to help all of us.

Don't blame WF---Blame the FEDS. I'm sure if WF did not release him and the Feds came in and audited their records, WF would have been hit with a severe penalty. As the article says, WF is working on getting him re-employed.
You can tell WF is not happy about it based on the tone of the quote from the WF spokesperson.

I see government regulation and intrusion. The situation seems very similar to school zero tolerance policies. Government has hamstrung common sense. You can bet behind the scenes some government lawyer and/or regulator may have threatened to take Wells Fargo to court, and there are probably a lot of Wells Fargo execs equally upset over this.

Maybe it is just me, I am having a hard time sorting out the 'tongue-in-cheek' comments from the angry retorts.

I banked with Wells Fargo for 20 years before I retired...We have no Wells Fargo Banking Centers in Southern Indiana...so, while I do maintain a retirement account with them, I have not stepped foot in a WF building since 2000. I don't think this has anything to do with the attitude of the public concerning the incident described, but I just wanted you all to know that my money will remain in the Wells Fargo Account, and I hope the guy gets his full retirement benefits after all the various parties sort out the 'fluff' from the 'Stuff'.

Even though he meets the criteria for termination I'm really surprised it's an automatic job action and not reviewable. It looks bad for WF but I can believe that no one thought of his particular combination of circumstances.

Nevertheless, I have expressed my indignation by rebooking my cross-country trip on a different stagecoach line.
