Yes it had to be that very rare collectors edition.. They went out of business in 1972.

Buffetbuster: I do miss Sleepy Hollow!! In its day, it was terrific.

Glad to see there are others who remember Sleepy Hollow. I only made it there once, but it was wonderful. It just seemed so Oklahoma to me.

You're right, BB. I just checked and Taylor Gro. & Restaurant has indeed reopened under new management. Nice to get some good news for a change.

Excellent topic CB!

When I bought my first JMS book in 1997, one of the places that jumped off the pages for me was Hap Townes in Nashville. It just sounded so cool and unlike anyplace I have ever been to before. Unfortunately, it was only open for a short amount of time after that, so I never really hadmuch of an opportunity to get there.

The White Way is another one that is on the wish list. I was outside of it on one of my first trips, but since it was a holiday weekend, they were closed. Never did get back before they shut down for good. Booooooo!!!!

A few more that sounded fantastic was Mama Lo's in Florida and Ma Groover's Plate and Pig in Georgia. Would have loved to have eaten at those places.

Just to show its not all whining here, I am grateful to have experienced such great Roadfood stops such as Tuba City Truck Stop (AZ), Mendenhall Revolving Tables Restaurant (MS), Uglesich's (LA), Dodd's Town House (IN), Buntyn (TN), Sleepy Hollow (OK), Jones Cafe (AR), M & J Sanitary Restaurant (NM), Smitty's (MS), Branch Ranch (FL), etc. before they closed down.

I ate at Stone's during its brief resurrection a couple of years ago. The fried chicken and sides were average at best, and the famous pie wasn't even on the menu; my server said that they had been unable to find a pie maker who could equal the quality that Stone's was known for. I had a feeling that day that the restaurant's revival was going to be short-lived and unfortunately I was right.

I don't think you missed anything when Melear's Barbecue closed. When I was there in 2002, it was great. When I returned in 2007, it was not. Very average. Something happened in the interval.

The restaurant that I missed out on was Stone's in Iowa. I wanted to try one of those mile-high lemon meringue pies. Too late now.

If it's any comfort, I don't think you missed much by not visiting Conway's Red Top.

I've just been reading the Stern's Blue Plate Specials & Blue Ribbon Chefs, from 2001 - but some of the appetizing places described in the book, such as Gordon's Coffee Shop, were closed even at the time of publication. Somehow that makes it more disappointing to me that I couldn't have eaten there even if I had gotten the book when it was first published.

Good topic, Bob. As I dont travel much these days, I have not had a dissapointment when I asked for advice, and thus always was able to eat at places advised.I am sure, howvwer, that day will come!!

For a long time I've had a list of Roadfood-reviewed restaurants that I intend to visit, but over the years a number of them have, unfortunately, hung up the "out of business" sign before I got a chance to get there. The White Way Cafe in Iowa, Dodd's Town House in Indiana and Taylor Gro. and Restaurant in Mississippi are three that come to mind. I just learned that two more that were high up on the list, Conway's Red Top in Colorado and Melear's Barbecue in Georgia, have recently called it quits before I could get there, and I'm pretty bummed about it. Does anyone else have a much-anticipated RF-reviewed place that closed up before they could pay a visit?
