The Daily News used to have a movie reviewer who loved pretentious incomprehensible "arty" movies; you KNOW that if she was reviewing a genre movie, she would tear it to shreds to the point where you would garner no useful information from the review.

From my reading of Pete Wells review, this was NOT the case. The way he wrote it, it seemed to me that he was expecting what was advertised, and got nothing even close to that. A bad review can come because the reviewer hates the type of food being reviewed, or because the reviewer enjoys it. This review certainly felt like the latter to me.

Bart
Re:brutal review of Guy Fieri's (FriedClamFanatic)

and...........now that we are trying to find out who really has the bigger one..........is there anyone here that has tried it?
Re:brutal review of Guy Fieri's (Dr of BBQ)
Following scathing review, NY Times held a party at Guy Fieri’s restaurant
 Published November 15, 2012
FoxNews.com

Guy Fieri defends himself on the "Today" show Thursday after his restaurant was ripped by New York Times critic Pete Wells. (AP)

New York Times food critic Pete Wells may not have found the food at Guy Fieri's new restaurant worth eating, but it was apparently good enough for others at the newspaper.

The New York Times confirmed to FoxNews.com that the very day that Wells' scathing review was printed in the paper's Dining and Wine section, the New York Times held a party at Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar.

"The New York Times ad sales department hosted an event for clients last night at Guy Fieri’s restaurant. The event was planned two months ago," Danielle Rhoades Ha wrote in an e-mail. She would not say what dishes or drinks were served or other details.

Wells blasted Guy's American Kitchen & Bar in a scathing review that posed a list of rhetorical questions directed at Fieri that included zingers like, "And when we hear the words Donkey Sauce, which part of the donkey are we supposed to think about?" And "Is this how you roll in Flavor Town?" The review also suggested that Fieri didn't even set foot in the place.

Wind of the New York Times party first came about after Fieri appeared on the "Today" show Thursday to defend his new eatery, which opened in New York City in September. NBC brought in a panel to discuss the review, which included Star Jones, Donny Deutsch, and Dr. Phil.

Dr. Phil, when defending Fieri saying that Wells’ piece was mean-spirited and self-serving, he let this slip: “And by the way,” he added, “last night, they hosted — the New York Times hosted a 160-person party at that restaurant.”
Calls made by FoxNews.com to Guy Fieri’s representatives and his American Bar and Grill have not been returned.

But Fieri told "Today's" Savannah Guthrie, that Wells' piece was "ridiculous." "I mean, I've read reviews - there's good and there's bad in the restaurant business, but that to me went so overboard, it really seemed like there was another agenda," he said.

He also suggested that the review was more than just about the food.
"To me it's impossible to have a dining experience and have every single thing wrong -- unless you come in with a different agenda and you want to sensationalize something and you want to blow it out of the water. It's a great way to make a name for yourself! Go after a celebrity chef that's not a New Yorker," he said.

Reaction to the review has been mixed, with some food critics saying that it is “the most brutal restaurant review ever,” while others claiming it is “probably one of the best things” ever.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2012/11/15/following-scathing-review-ny-times-held-160-person-party-at-guy-fieris/?intcmp=features#ixzz2CL5FQxVj
Re:brutal review of Guy Fieri's (MetroplexJim)

That was witheringly funny, kind of reminiscent of Tom Shales' annual "review" of Kathie Lee Gifford's Christmas Specials.

For pure enjoyment, check out these samples:http://jimromenesko.com/2...ng-kathie-lee-gifford/
Re:brutal review of Guy Fieri's (MetroplexJim)

 Thanks for posting this!

Nothing like a good, old-fashioned pi$$ing contest!

brutal review of Guy Fieri's (Dr of BBQ)

The New York Times writes brutal review of Guy Fieri's new restaurant
 Published November 14, 2012
FoxNews.com

Guy Fieri in New York, April 14, 2009. (AP Photo/Charles Sykes) (AP2009)

Guy Fieri --best known as the spiky-haired host of the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives"-- has another feather in his cap: one of the worst and most hilariously cringe-worthy restaurant reviews ever to appear in the New York Times.

Guy's American Kitchen & Bar, which opened in September in New York City's Time Square, got blasted by restaurant critic Pete Wells who wanted to know why the Awesome Pretzel Chicken Tenders were "so far from awesome" and the watermelon margarita tastes "like a combination of radiator fluid and formaldehyde."

Wells' review, styled as a list of increasingly-toxic questions directed at Fieri, includes zingers like, "And when we hear the words Donkey Sauce, which part of the donkey are we supposed to think about?" And "Is this how you roll in Flavor Town?"

At times it gets right down personal. "When you cruise around the country for your show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” rasping out slangy odes to the unfancy places where Americans like to get down and greasy, do you really mean it? Or is it all an act? Is that why the kind of cooking you celebrate on television is treated with so little respect at Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar?"

Wells finishes by giving the new restaurant a zero stars and a "POOR" rating.
The Times review that is spread across the Internet like wildfire, with some piling it on, while others saying Fieri was unfairly skewered.

Food Network host Alton Brown tweeted support--sort of. "I am planning on visiting Guy Fieri's NYC eatery this weekend because it can't be as bad as all those snooty New Yorkers say. #wishmeluck"

If the Times Square sprawling 500-seat eatery's goal is to attract the city's hungry tourists, this review may help to serve its purpose. It has certainly piqued the curiosity of some, like us, who have to find out for ourselves if it's really such a train wreck.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2012/11/14/new-york-times-writes-brutal-review-guy-fieri-new-restaurant/?intcmp=features#ixzz2CIAwAcq0
