I think the problem is costs rising faster than income. Seems to be a theme, no matter the industry.

Hummmm... forget the $25 sandwiches, let's order a simple lunch from their menu:

Cheeseburger, fries, & slaw; and since it's NYC let's do a piece of cherry cheesecake for dessert and a cup of coffee. The bill, including tax and a 15% tip: SIXTY BUCKS!

The only time I ever ate there was in the early 1980's and even back then the bill for a "no appetizer, no dessert" simple lunch for four was > $100!

I agree I have never been there but loved watching the videos of the giant sandwiches that looked so good on TV shows that featured The Stage Deli. It's a shame a lot of old and famous restaurants are going away and I can't imagine which restaurants will take their place. It seems to me the newer mom and pops, independents don't have the character that the old ones did. Poorly written but I think you'll get my point.

NYC's famous Stage Deli closes,

The famous Stage Deli in Manhattan has closed. Visitors on Friday were greeted with a hand-written sign on the door that said "Thanks for 75 years!"
The deli, on Seventh Avenue near 54th Street, got its start 75 years ago. It was known for overstuffed sandwiches named for celebrities.
It was popular with Broadway audiences.

Co-owner Paul Zolenge says the dining landmark had been struggling for some time.
He told The New York Times that yet another rent increase was expected when the lease ended in a few months.
