If you believe what is on Wikipedia, two things attributed to its downfall in the late 70's/early 80's.
1. Cheaper fish used during a shortage of Cod (they say 1970's - I am thinking it was the late 70's).
2. A buyout by Mrs. Paul's Seafood shortly thereafter which continued the trend of using cheaper ingredients of lesser quality than had previously been used.

I loved AT's in the 1970's, but by about 1979/1980, I noticed their fish was not as good, and having read the Wikipedia entry, I see why.

From that time, AT's has been bought out at least a couple more times, but trying to resurrect the once great chain has apparently not been so fruitful.

I think it was around 1969 or 1970 -- in Charleston, West Virginia.

It's been some time since I last went to an Arthur Treachers. Is the standard fish and chips meal still $1.69? That was two large pieces of fish, those excellent chips, cole slaw and hushpuppies. As I recall any drink was extra.

That must have been at least two or three years ago.

None in Knoxville. Mamaw prefers Captain D's on Wednesday night when they have their senior special. It is pretty good but only on occasion. Very good cole slaw and fries and the breading on the fish is good. Their tartar sauce is good.

Last one I saw in central NY was back in probably 1995 or 96. I knew it was a mistake to eat there as soon as I walked in, but I did anyway. Store was filthy, and the food was incredibly greasy and just plain bad. Didn't stay open much longer I don't think, it's definitely not there now.
I know how popular they were, so I chalked that one up to bad management.
When I was kid, Long John Silver's was where it was at.

Arthur Treacher's is paired with Nathan's at both the Staten Island Mall & Newport Mall in Jersey City.

If I could combine Roy Rogers & Arthur Treacher's in a franchise...I would.

Out here on Long Island there's a chain of chicken places call Pudgies. I think they make a really good product. Seems they have some type of deal with Arthur Treacher's as many of their stores sell both. There's a link on the 'Pudgie's' web site to add "Arthur Treacher's' to your franchise. They must use very similar type of cooking equipment.

internet shows 20 locations all in n.e. usa mostly ohio penn ny, here in florida they have some combined with miami subs but not the same

How many Arthur Treachers are left? I live in Columbus Ohio thats where Authur Treachers got started in 1969,There was one left
in Lancaster Ohio and it closed last month with a sign saying Thank You for 43 years. What caused the decline of the chain. I always
thought their fish was good.
