It's like finding an old friend.

Anyway, I went up to Pennsylvania and found this chocolate town. This town is so crazy about chocolate, even the asphalt streets have cocoa in it, so the town smells like chocolate. The company is called Hershey and they make these little dollops of chocolate candies called "Kisses," - which is so cute. Anyone heard of this place?

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (ladygodiva)

a good local chocolate is Buckeye Chocolate in Ohio, the chocolate bar is excellent and their crunch bar is too.

their chocolate bars are 1.99 each and are available at some Giant Eagle stores or I believe that you could order from them and even visit them,

Another good place to visit a chocolate factory is Harry London in ohio, they charge for the tour but last time I went you got about 2 pieces of chocolate free.

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (Candyman)

quote:
Originally posted by The Travelin' Man

quote:

quote:

There is a wonderful chocolate store in Daytona Beach called Angell & Phelps . I had never seen of such things until I moved here, and was hesitant to try, as I like my chocolate a little more pure. They are fabulous, and around Christmas, everyone will have some around, as they make great gifts -- so you have either given some, or gotten some, or both.

The place is Grimaldi's Candies in downtown Melbourne. Their website is http://www.grimaldicandies.com/index.html which was recently updated.

A little local background story, too....the Grimaldi family had owned the factory and made the chocolates for years in downtown. They sold their store and recipes in 1999 with a five year non-compete agreement. Well, last November (five years and one month, if you are counting), one of the younger Grimaldi's opened a shop beachside selling chocolate with tweaked recipes. "Tweaked" does not begin to describe how the new owners felt: http://www.floridatoday.com/!NEWSROOM/moneystoryB1205GRIMALDI0.htm

For most folks around here, they think that the chocolate is similar enough, so it just depends on whose store you are closer as to where you buy the chocolate. Of course, beach denizens are widely regarded to be a more affluent bunch, so I am sure the Grimaldi guy is stealing a healthy chunk of business from the new owners of his family's former business. Personally, I just think the new people signed a bad non-compete agreement.

I have not found a web site yet for VinnieLu's.

Steve

Posted - 12/02/2006 : 23:15:36
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, This is Vinnie Grimaldi from Vinnielu's Beachside Chocolates. I noticed we are mentioned on this site. We have a web address it's www.vinnieluchocolates.com
I'd like to set the record straight. First of all What does tweaked recipes suppose to mean?
I hope the pizza place that I just ate at didn't use any tweaked recipes. The URL he listed doesn't exist!!! We have nothing to do with my parents' old place by the way.

I'm an 11th generation candy maker. I've been making candy since I was a kid in the 1970's. My wife and I started Vinnielu Chocolates in 2004. I think we make the best chocolate covered potato chips anywhere.I've only been making them for 36 years!!! I make our confections using my own original recipes! What sets us apart from some other candy companies is the fact that our candies contain
NO TRANS FAT!!

I'd be glad to answer any questions.
Thanks
RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (PepperPhil)

In the nashville area we have GOO GOO bars.... Been in Greenwich Village for years.

Also City Bakery (a high end "cafeteria" in Flatiron Area) has a "Chocolate Room" which is a small closet-sized room with shelves and shelves of their homemeade chocolate. Even better is their hot chocolate which is made in vats on the counter. There is a machine that melts, folds, and heats these chocolates with a bit of milk that is then sold by the cup. Basically rich melted chocolate, served with a homemade huge marshmallow on top. (They also sell the marshmallows, which used to come in small lunchbox sized tins with map of NYC).

I seem to remember some local chain candy shops now deceased. Whenever he had a little money that he considered as extra, he would go into the shop and buy a fine piece of chocolate. He decided that he would one day own a candy store so that he could have all the chocolates that he wanted to eat. His mom saved her money and worked hard. As a result, he went to medical school and became one of the best cancer doctors in the southeast. He proceeded to buy the Angell and Phelps candy store. I talked to him one day on an elevator (he was the doctor of one of my dearest friend's). I mentioned the story about him owning this candy store and he said "Yes, but life is cruel.......at one time I could not afford to eat the candy there but now that I can afford it, my waistline and my doctor says "No NO"!

I was in that store not long ago and it smells bad inside .. not sure if from restaurants next door or old carpetting .. but the smell was so bad we didn't buy any chocolates

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (rpc717)

Particular to New Orleans:

1) pralines - creamyish brown sugar pattie laced with pecans - AWESOME!!

2) Elmer's Gold Brick (soft milk chocolate with pecans) and Heavenly Hash (chocolate coated marshmallow with almonds) eggs - Easter treats extraordinaire

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (harriet1954)

Regarding Bedre's: It looks as if they did have their own site at one time, but the domain's for sale now. Its in a small ranch house and its been around at least 50 years. Their signature candies are the "Turkey Joints". Cannot be found anywhere else. They are sticks of chocolate with crushed Brazil nuts throughout, then covered with a silvery, satiny coat of candy, similar in texture to ribbon candy. I get them for Christmas every year and have two for breakfast on Christmas morning. They come in a jar of about 12-15 sticks and are very rich! Go to www.turkeyjoints.com to get a look at them. The candy is superb; the little factory tour is terrific but best of all is a story about this candy shop.

Many years ago, a young lad who delivered newspapers to help earn money for his mom used to love this candy store.

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (harriet1954)

I'm trying to remember the name of a family-run chocolate place not far from where I live, but there's also Bayard's Chocolate House. Here's kind of a lame website for their Pennsauken location: http://www.bayard-chocolates.com

For any major holiday, they always hire someone to dress in costume and stand on the property and wave at cars. Huge Easter Bunny, Santa, etc. There's a location in Cinnaminson as well, and they always had a girl dressed in old-fashioned clothing sitting on a porch-type swing in nice weather, waving at passers-by. I've been in Bayard's before and their chocolate smell is intoxicating.

Edit: I just remembered the place I was trying to think of: Giambri's. They have been around since 1915 and are located on the corner of Brand Avenue and the White Horse Pike in Clementon, NJ. A good friend of mine lives in the apartments right behind there. The place looks really small. Here's their website: http://www.giambriscandy.com

There is a famous candy store in still-quaint Merchantville, NJ, called Aunt Charlotte's Candies. This place has been around for 85 years and still going very strong. Their chocolates are unbelievable. I wish they had a website but I couldn't find one.

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (tmiles)

Our Heberts "The original roadside candy store" has according to the paper been broken up by the family owners. As I understand it the original store and factory is now non family owned and corporate. Two or three retail stores are now indivdualy owned by family members. Eaton Farm Candies in Sutton MA, is I think, still family run. Both make a good product.

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (RubyRose)

quote:

quote:

Four recommendations from Saint Louis:

Bissinger Chocolate. High end. Located on McPherson Avenue in the Central West End. Oak display cases. Properly dressed matrons transacting business. Multiple art gallaries across the street. About half their businees is out of state and most of that in Washington, D.C. though I don't know why. Bring plenty of cash. Take a look at www.bissingers.com

Bissingers is the place that makes chocolate covered raspberries every summer. I love those!

John

Last week, I received a gift of Bissinger's chocolate covered cherries and they were outstanding. It's funny that I opened this thread and they were mentioned here.

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (chocolateman1)

In the St. Louis area, I have found that Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Company is the BEST for hand made chocolates. My favorites are the Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Molasses Puff, Pecan Bark, and Heavenly Hash. Each store has a hand crafted long candy case with delicious truffles, cremes, caramels, and nut assortments. I go to the on in Creve Coeur, but they have stores in St. Louis Hills, Kirkwood, Chesterfield, Brentwood, Creve Coeur, St. Peters, St. Charles, Shioloh (IL), Fairview Heights (IL), Lemay, and Downtown in the SBC building. Check them out: www.chocolatechocolate.com
RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (tsores)

There is one that I loved and will truly miss. I always thought Fannie May (Chicago and elsewhere) was the best candy value around. Excellent product at a reasonable price for fine candy. The chocolate was high quality and the fillings were between flavorful and intense. My favorites were the 1) dark chocolate vanilla cream 2) Pixies (turtles) 3) Trinidads. We learned the codes for markings on top to know what to pick out of an assortment box. Before that, my wife would puch out the bottoms and if she didn't want it just put it back. (She was a cutie.)

Fannie May went bankrupt earlier this year. Another firm bought the assets including the recipies. Maybe the product will re-emerge but and hopefully as I remembered it. But I have my doubts.

Oh well.

RE: Local Candy and Chocolate (bethgrd)

This web site is so wonderful;this thread alone is priceless.
