I have never encountered this flavor in any other chocolate in a chocolate assortment or other candy ... not in the cremes or the nugats or any other ... too bizarre.

I actually have to spit out the piece if I bite into one and wash my mouth out ... it's that bad.

The only other place that I've noticed that horrible flavor is in the glaze on fruit tarts (that would be the little tart shells that have fruit in them that has a shiney glaze ... and also in some petit-fours, though not (I don't think) the ones covered with regular cake frosting or fondant.

I don't know if this could be "confectioners glaze" because there is all kinds of chocolates that seem to have a shiney sort-of glaze that are fine.

If anyone knows what this mystery ingredient could be I'd sure be interested to know.

RE: Strange Candy (CajunKing)

quote:

I'm gonna have to say that I agree with the people that said Jelly Belly Jelly Beans...the buttered popcorn flavor has got to be one of the worst things ever! Most people here in Minnesota does not know what it is because it's like a candy unique to Hawaii. When I moved here I could not find it anywhere at all, like I said most people didn't even know what I was talking about. Now I buy it online at snackshawaii.com. Their the cheapest site I found with cheap shipping. You'll either love it or hate it cause it is a aquired taste, but being raised in Hawaii I love this stuff. I'm trying to find Li Hing Mui margaritas too, but can't find it anywhere, but I know they make it cause they serve it in Hawaii clubs.

quote:

There's a brand of Japanese breath mint called Jintan. They look like little silver BBs and come in a small box. They are so strong, like Altoids on steroids.

And this is probably more a snack than a candy, but has anyone had that Chinese dried and salted plum called Li Hing Mui? I got hooked on it when we lived in Hawaii. They're intensely salty with a hint of sweetness. Just thinking of it has me drooling on my keyboard.

RE: Strange Candy (dasl_4)

Rose Pastilles and Rose Turkish Delight(powdered sugar coated not chocolate) are yummy .. Though not commercially available -- thank goodness -- the homemade chocolates one of my aunts made could have been sold in munitions shops. How she managed to capture the flavor of camphor and moth balls, with a texture of fingernails scraping a blackboard is beyond me. And I am grateful for that. I later learned that part of her secret was recycling old Easter bunnies. One Christmas I gave her a large block of Belgian chocolate to work from. The next time I saw her, she handed me a box of chocolates. As I put one in my mouth I said, "So, how did you like working with the Belgian chocolate?" To which she replied, "Oh, I'm saving that for a special occasion."

RE: Strange Candy (Michael Stern)

I think spruce gum is pretty grotesque: chew until it's good and soft, then use it to patch leaks in your canoe.

RE: Strange Candy (ahmicchick)

Ugh, salted black licorice chews, kind of like Wine Gums but nasty.

RE: Strange Candy (Michael Hoffman)

quote:

quote:

On Caribean islands in front of schools there are older ladies selling treats to the kids at recess and lunch.
