Now, they can add "deluded" to the description of their overall state, despite the truth of SC's statement.

2) chili on a pizza
yep, some have referred to this variation as "sky pie" with the "sky" part referring to the 'Skyline', the chili parlor that is most probably the most popular in the area. The fact that such a pizza has been made does not then mean that pizza parlors put chocolate, nutmeg, or cinnamon into their standard pizza sauce. In fact, there is no evidence to conclude that those ingredients are found in every or even most Cincinnati style chili. That said, you will find this variation offered very rarely if at all (FAR more frequently, you see bbq sauce, ranch dressing, pesto, olive oil, or buffalo style sauce in place of traditional tomato-based pizza sauce - chili is a extreme rarity) on an actual pizzeria menu locally. More likely, one makes such a thing at home. And as such, if you can make it at home, then by all means pile on all the cinnammon, nutmeg, and/or chocolate you want, if that is to your liking.

3) good pizza in Cincinnati
Good is relative. I have found several good (imho) pizzas in Cincinnati. To say there is no good pizza in Cincinnati is to say either a) one has not looked hard enough, or b) one is far too picky, at least when it comes to pizza. I'll add that good pizza (imho) need not be of one certain style, for example, a pizza need not be NYC style in order to be good. If one places artificial/arbitrary limits on what can be "good" (such as it must be thin crust or it must be baked in a coal or wood fired oven) then one will obviously have a much harder time finding "good".

4) great pizza in Cincinnati
I personal don't think we any truly great pizza in Cincinnati. Good - yes, Great - I doubt it. We certainly are not known for our pizza, and that's OK - we are known for other things, just as many other regions are. That said, I have not had the opportunity to visit any of the much lauded "great" pizzerias of this country to make a comparison for myself. I look forward to doing so some day.

5) Cincinnati giving pizza a bad name
This is simply a foolish statement. People don't come to Cincinnati for great pizza, just as no one comes to NYC for goetta. Does NYC give goetta a bad name? No. Such silliness.

6) Cici's
I've re-read the statement several time, and again, it is clear that Cici's is being called Cincinnati pizza. Aside from being a weird statement, as there is no "cincinnati style" as far as pizza goes, Cici's is a national chain and should be compared to other national chains. I suppose the one thing we agree on here is that Cici's is not good pizza, but it should also be clear that Cici's is not a Cincinnati pizza place, rather it happens to have some locations here (just like Domino's, Papa John's, Donatos, Pizza Hut, etc etc etc.)
RE: (Relatively) new pizza in Cincinnati (NYPIzzaNut)

I think Cincinnati gives pizza a bad name.

RE: (Relatively) new pizza in Cincinnati (jmckee)

quote:

quote:

quote:

I am well aware of that and their pizza is as bad as Cinci pizza gets.

Unless there is a type of "Cincinnati Pizza" that uses cinnamon, nutmeg, and chocolate in its sauce. pb

Believe it or not, some chains do a Cincinnati Chili pizza, on occasion. I think the place across the street from 5/3 - am thinking the name is Indigo - does pretentious california style pizzas. Teller's also does some of these, sometimes, or at least they used to.

I'm not sure there is a NY style pizza anywhere near there

One fairly well reviewed pizza near you is at Dewey's at Oakley Square. Only about a mile away, not too bad of a walk, really.

Another one to try is one of the very few sell-by-the-slice places in Cincinnati, Lucy Blue's at Mt Lookout Square. They even have a NY-style ordering window that opens right onto the sidewalk, so you never have to leave the sidewalk to order a slice. i tired them during their openign week, was so-so, may have gotten better since then.

I think the closest thing we have to a nyc style pizza is at Pomidoris in Clifton and Montgomery, or at Betta's Italian Oven in Norwood.

Fratelli's in West Chester has gotten some press since it's recent opening as being authentic, but to be quite succinct: their pizza sucks. The crust is OK, the sauce is thin and bitter, and the toppings are scant.

I like Dewey's and Pomidori's - pretty close to a NY pizza crust and taste - the pizza at Betta's and Fratelli's is plain awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: (Relatively) new pizza in Cincinnati (TJ Jackson)

Ah - that is my neighborhood Mio's, a regular favorite of ours

I really like the pizza there, tho i can believe you when you say it was better long ago

RE: (Relatively) new pizza in Cincinnati (NYPIzzaNut)

quote:

The Mio's on Eight Mile is a very recently (last 2-3 years, tops) built location that replaced one that had been on Mt Carmel Tabasco Road

So the Eight Mile location you went to recently is not the same Eight Mile location as the one you went to in the late 70's and early 80's - where exactly on Eight Mile was this old location? They make abominable pizza now and back then it was first rate stuff.

RE: (Relatively) new pizza in Cincinnati (NYPIzzaNut)

quote:

There is a lot of good eating to be had at Hyde Park Square, but none of it is pizza.

Same commissary......the established locations seeem to get it right, the others dont seem to have a clue.

I can't get the folks at Nicky's to make me a pie with all fresh mozz. They seem to treat it like a topping just like any other - ie you add the fresh atop regular mozzerella same as you'd add pepperoni, mushrooms, etc. Discouraging. I want the fresh INSTEAD of the regular shreds.
