Sometime during the day today Two (2) of the Bones disappeared from their refrigerated storage bag and apparently were consumed by unknown creatures. High on the list of suspects are two (2) Scottish Terriers who have been lurking near the kitchen since the bones were placed in storage. Additional evidence pointing to the dogs in question is based on dirty brown noses and muddy fur the alledged "Perp's" display after attempting to bury the remaining evidence of their crime.
Plan to see at least one and perhaps as many as three episodes of LAW & ORDER based on this event.
more to follow...film at 11

Post Script to the original story of Steaks on Sale

After last nights dinner my son decided to check the local Kroger Market for some of this beef. The Sale ended Sunday Night,so he thought he would not be able to get it at the sale price. WRONG !! The Meat department had two uncut sections of the T-Bone region left and offered to cut him some Steak at the sale price. He cell phoned me from the store and I added another 8 steaks to the order he was giving. So the end result...After the weekend Meat-Fest is that We have added 17 of these beauties to our freezer and my Son managed to get another 8. Now to get him to invite me over for dinner next week sometime !!

RE: Where to find the Largest Steaks ?? They were joined by Baked Idaho Russets, Southern Style Green Beans, Sauted Mushrooms, Fresh Baked Dinner Rolls.... and a Marie Callendar's RazzleBerry pie and some Grandkid-baked Chocolate Chip Cookies with Blue Bunny Ice Cream for dessert. The two kids got pieces of steak from the 4 adults, and chowed down quite well on whole menu !

Then we see the aftermath of a quiet dinner at hom with my son and his family. The 4 bones will be shared by our two Scotties, starting tomorrow. They had enough scraps and exercise playing with the children tonight to cause them to hibernate for a day or two.

I'd have to say this turned into a pretty good Steak Night!! (mayor al)
Michael,
I agree totally. As I said above, we have been very disappointed (especially) with the Beef in the Louisville area. In SoCal we had very good luck at the Stater Brothers Markets near us on the High Desert. Their prices were as reasonable as any chain store and they were willing to take an order over the phone and have it ready in a couple of hours...or overnight if it was a large cutting job.

Here in the Louisville area, Most of the chain stores seem to use beef with an injected "solution" of up to 12 % and then they charge for "premium" quality intead of the Roadkill grade that sits on the counter in plastic forever. The Krogers (3 of them in the New Albany area) will cut to order and do take phone orders (I live about 15 miles from the nearest and don't want to make two trips or wait for any great time.) I wondered if they would use the 'lower'- mass-production grade of meat for their 'Sale' Steaks, but when I saw these I talked a bit to the cutter. He told me that they used the 'custom' grade that they use in the more expensive 'glass case cuts ' of beef. I didn't push for definitions. The cutter did say there are NO Injections in this meat. I did ask that the cuts (T-Bone) be taken from the Porterhouse End of the Chunk rather than just the 'Strip side'. They did do that for me. We tried two of the smallest of the 14 the day we got them. 1.85 lbs per steak. They oven-broiled (indoors) just fine. Nothing added until ready to serve, then just salt and black pepper.
The weather is moderate today, so my Son Josh and I will grill these outdoors over charcoal and some hickory. I will photo the event and try to post the finished product this evening.

RE: Where to find the Largest Steaks ?? (mayor al)

Let me bring this thread back with an "almost on-topic" post...rather than start a new thread.

This week the Mega-Chain Krogers has T-Bones on Sale. The usual $8.99 a lb. is down to $4.99 a lb(using the Kroger Card discount). While the usual plastic wrap 1/2 to 3/4" steaks in the self-serve area are fine for pan frying, we wanted a bit more "body". So I phoned in an order to the Meat Department Yesterday asking for 14 nice 1.5 inch thick (2 lb plus/minus) steaks cut with as much of the Filet as was possible. I picked up my order this morning. They are beautiful. Each is a full 2 lbs. or more, and has the appearance of a well-marbled Porterhouse.

Edited- Sunday Morning-- Here is our Sunday Dinner for 4 in the early prep Stage

We haven't been too happy with the beef we find in the Krogers, or other grocery chains here in So Indiana, but these are about as good as anything I ever was able to find in SoCal. The Utah based Miller-Beef that supplies Stater Brothers and Von's in SoCal was pretty darn good (IMHO). We will report back after a family Steak Fry Sunday evening.

RE: Where to find the Largest Steaks ?? (mayor al)
We stopped in at our local "Logan's Roadhouse" for a New Years eve supper using a gift card we got for Christmas. Their Rib-Eye Steak is a real Rib-Eye (Delmonico) not a Rib steak minus the bone. Anyway while swapping roadfood comments with the Manager (We go there now and then so he is at least aware we are repeat customers) Anyway we were talking about the place cutting it's own Steaks daily. I asked if they did any larger steaks than normally appear on the menu. He said they would with a couple of days notice to allow some 'aging' of the cut steak . I think when the holiday traffic dies a bit I will call and see if he will do a couple of 32 oz Rib-Eyes for one of my sons and myself. We will judge them against the 16oz Menu-Large steak offered to all. I'll report back about pricing and quality in a couple of weeks. This is a first-time effort for me working with a 'Chain' on a custom order. We can but hope for the best.

The place offers grilled skewers of Squash,Mushrooms,Bell Pepper chunks,Red Onion and 'Mater chunks with a good grilling 'juice' on them.
