some corny thoughts

Sweet summer corn is one of my favorite things, have it several times a week. I love the nostalgic ,delicous ritual of the whole endeavor . First I peel off the husks just before dropping them into boiling water ,bring back to a boil then turn off the heat & always serve it in corn shaped dishes with little corn handles plugged into each side ...the corn stays v good and tender for about 10-15 minutes - there is seldom any left after that. It's been a flavorful corn season here in northern california -some from farm stands , but most from our local regional market Raleys who has had some of the best sweetest white thats been around in awhile- may have tasted a slight decline tonite , but will double check soon to see if the best is really gone already- sure hope not, because I am not done yet . Corn has been selling 3/99, but a few weeks ago had some great very local corn at five for a dollar , a price I have not seen for awhile. I feel so bad when I see the corn burning up in the midwest- wonder if you can even get it there and at what price? Hope all is still corny where you are!

We have plenty of good sweet corn available in central Ohio. We sometimes get it at a farm stand and other times just at the grocery store. It has all been great. We only get 2 ears at a time so I don't pay much attention to the price but it seems to me last we bought some it was 6/$1.00.

6star It is the field corn that is burning up from lack of water. Generally, sweet corn is OK. Here's a website for you: http://www.sweetcornfestival.com/ Field corn is the best! .... When the kernels first fill out, it is sweet too. I don't like 'sweet' corn, as it is too sweet. I pick fresh field corn, after shucking, wet down the ears warp 2 ears together with sarran warp and freeze. It keeps very well frozen for a year. .... Which reminds me, take a couple of ears out of the freezer!.

Take an ear of corn, leave all the leaves on. Put in the microwave for 4 minutes. Remove and slice off the husk. Ear will fall out with no silks attached and ready to eat. it's amazing and simple

This year my garden was a huge success. Our peaches and cream did outstanding and for a small garden, we harvested 90 ears that we blanched some of it and froze it but the best was when we picked it and dropped it on boiling water ten minutes after picked. We dipped it in unsalted butter and salted it. OUTSTANDING We also got several bushels each of beets cucumbers, squash, peppers (various) and tomatoes. Great summer foods. Paul E. I envy you home growers. We do get some farmers market veggies out here but usually in the early Spring/late Fall. The local growing seasons are short due to the heat. Most store produce comes from CA or Mexico.

I'm with edwmax. Field corn is fantastic -- especially when you're a kid and you swipe it from the field next to the ball field on a hot summer day. I love it right there in the field. No cooking. Just pick it and eat it where you stand.

I like the bi-color corn. Had some last night, it was excellent.
