My husband lived in Binghamton, NY many years ago and is dying to have something called Spiedies. He said he ate at a restuarant on Front St. that he said had the best. Does anyone know what that place is and where could I find the best Spiedies so I can surprise him either making them or having some sent (if possible) and I hope I didn't spell that wrong. Thank you

There are a few restaurants that specialize in this upstate NY regional specialty -- especially in the Binghamton area. I believe that it was "invented" at a place called Sharkey's, which is likely reviewed on this site or in the Roadfood book. I had a roommate from the area, and she also swore by them. I know that she was able to find Spiedie sauce (which is actually a marinade) in a bottle at a grocery store, but I am not sure if it was here in Florida, or something that she had shipped in from NY. The premise, simply, is to marinate your choice of meat (I believe that pork, chicken and lamb are the most common) and grill it on a skewer. You then make a pseudo-sandwich by removing the meat from the skewer with a slice of bread. Enjoy. Steve
