They must be popular cuz they are all over the place. I tried one and it was paper thin and terrible. DO you know anyone that likes them?

I have been thinking of going to try one that opened in Dallas. After your report, I think I will take a pass on "Steak & Shake".
    Thank you.

i grew up in st. louis, mo which is home to many a steak and shake. i love it. thin crusty burgers, good shoestring fires, and great shakes. my parents always took us kids there for a special treat. maybe i just like it because the food reminds me of 'the good old days'-- but i always make it a point to hit up steak and shake whenever i'm traveling through someplace that has one, and my traveling companions always seem to like it too.

I have the same memories of the one in Springfield, MO. Haven't eaten there in years, however. A few months back there was a similar thread on Steak & Shake. Might want to do a search on that.

I ate in one a few months ago in Erie PA. May have been the worst burger I ever had. Almost rancide tasting....

I'm not a fast food person anyway so this really turned me off.

The burgers are good, but it takes at least a triple for me to get me my "meat" quota. The fries you can keep. Give me a Whataburger anyday!

Try their Frisco Melt. Good Sandwich! AND for FF their Chili is pretty good too.
BTW this thread was moved to it's current home in the FF Forum.

Been a SnS regular ever since growing up and going to college in Illinois. Used to be pretty much strictly a midwestern experience, but now that they're growing the chain all over the eastern U.S., I'm guessing they're having some quality control issues.
Best thing is all their burgers are made from fresh meat, made into patties right at the grill. Previous posters are correct, they are small so you do need a double or triple to get a real burger experience. There's one about 20 mins from QFan's house and I still love 'em. Also their shakes are terrific. You need to give them another try IMHO.

I can't stand their burgers or their service. Granted, I've only been to two different ones here, but I'd have to say the service at the Steak & Shakes I've been in are the only things worse than their hamburgers, which have been flat little discs of crisp something they insist is meat.

Odd...........I must have had the same servers but different cook. THe only time I ate at one, I was served what tasted like a rubbery grease ball!

Steak n Shake is a lot like White Castle - its one of those places you probably wouldn't like if you haven't been going there all your life.

Their breakfast is lousy, but every couple of months or so, I go and get my Double Steakburger, Orange Freeze, and fries. Good stuff.

I've had some that were good, and some that were dried out... depends on the location...

I always love their shoestring fries though..

(we don't have any in NJ, though. So I usually get them when I am away, like in Florida.... the drive thru's are usually open 24 hours, so they come in handy for a burger for breakfast before my airplane flight back home)

I too grew up eating S & S. For me a double steakburger, extra cheese, mustard, pickles, and onions. Or as Al said, the Frisco Melt is great too. I love the place.

I will go every now and then and get a double steakburger but the real highlight is always the chocolate milkshake.

Steak and Shake is on my ok chain list ... double steakburger w/ works, fries and chili. In every case they do each a bit different, but once you know what to expect, it is easy to get a yearnin'.

We just had a Steak n Shake open here in Huntsville, AL. I have been about 5 times since they opened. The first time we went inside and ate and I was under going cancer treatments so I really wasn't that hungry. I ordered a BLT and it was fair. The next time I went through the drive-thru and ordered a double-burger, fries, and diet chrry-cola. The burger was great. Juicy and loaded with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. I love the thin shoe-string fries. Took the grandkids once and they, of course, loved it (all had milshakes). Went again through the drive-thru and the burger was again good. I think like most fast-food places it is hit and miss. I've had people here at work say that they would never go back.

I think the trick is to order a double-meat burger and then it does'nt tast so think and flat.

Like wheregreggeats, SnS is on my ok chain list. I never go out of my way to eat at one, but if I end up there, it isn't the end of the world. Two things I can say is that they really do have good shakes (love the mint chocolate chip/banana side by side shake) and they are the closest restaurant to me where I can find five way chili.

As for the burgers, I will pass.

The only good thing I can say about Steak and Shake food is that it's available 24 hours a day, which is convenient when I get out of work and don't want breakfast from McDonald's. Other than that, the only thing from there I'm willing to put in my mouth are the shakes. They do a darn fine milkshake, and you can combine flavours.

The fries I can take or leave (they'd be good if they'd only COOK them instead of serving them limp and barely darker than when they were cut from the potato); the chili is awful; the burgers have almost no meat on them so you have to get a triple just to sort of taste it.

Which is why I was so horribly offended a few months ago (last year some time?) when Steak and Shake was the featured restaurant of the day on the home page. WTF? It's a chain with nasty horrible food.

I've liked SnS for many years, had a couple of bad ones along the way but still really enjoy a double with fries. We don't have any in our area but generally stop when traveling. Getting a little expensive though as our last order of 4 dbl cheese (no fries) and 2 lg shakes was about $25.

The only good thing I can say about Steak & Shake is that I read in today's newspaper that they just closed the one near the Ohio State University campus. That's the good news. The bad news is that they still have 14 of them open in the area.

I think Steak N Shake is the only franchise that even comes close to real "roadfood". To me it tastes the same as it did 30 years ago long before they expanded.

And here I was hoping their quality had gone down...how incredibly disappointing that something that absolutely foul has lasted this long, and even gets accolades on a site I had come to trust for quality, tasteful food.

And here I was hoping their quality had gone down...how incredibly disappointing that something that absolutely foul has lasted this long, and even gets accolades on a site I had come to trust for quality, tasteful food.

This has me confused. The site (RF) did not review, nor recommend, S&S; why blame it?

There was a positive review from the Sterns on Steak & Shake listed under Tennessee. It looks like it has been archived. Since the restaurant of the day is picked at random, I'm sure it was the restaurant of the day at one time.

I am very nearly certain there was a Steak n Shake review by the Sterns on this website

                                                    I cannot locate it

To clarify: If they USED TO BE a decent restaurant, then I can see where some people would like them. However, if their quality of food has ALWAYS been at the current level, I am disappointed in many folks around here.

And yes, there used to be a review, and yes, it was the featured restaurant of the day a while back. It seems to have disappeared.

Sorry, my mistake. I was under the impression you were referring to the positive comments by some posters. BTW, the one here has always been very good, I've been going there for 28 years and do not remember a bad experience. I guess like most places it's up to the manager.

I like Steak and Shake. It is a quick and tasty meal when out shopping and running errands. They sell their chili in individual portions (cans) at the local grocery store. We are getting a Red Robin in the neighborhood, does anyone have any experience with that chain?

Just a brief note about the SnS Chili in cans. It is included in the huge recall of canned products from the Castlleberry Meat Processing company that is underway now (July 2007) The news report said the recall applied only to the canned chili at SnS, NOT the chili prepared from "Scratch/Mix" in the individual restaurants.

This list of recalled products has expanded to over 90 products, with some store and restaurant brands included.

There is a thread about Red Robin in this forum somewhere. I will say my experience with that chain has been dismal. It is pricey (for a Burger joint), very noisy (Loud Music makes conversation difficult) and the furniture looks and feels like it came from IKEA (not for big folks) and is packed closely together so that you are bumping elbows constantly if the place is near full. The food is about the same as a Ruby Tuesday's or other similiar place.
We will not go into a Red Robin again.
