Beacon Drive-In's JC Stroble in ICU

Looks like "The Voice of the Beacon" is having a bit of a rough go. The news came in my Facebook feed from nancypalooza. Whatever your feelings about the Beacon Drive-In, JC Stroble is a Roadfood legend. It would appear that he could use some prayers-a-plenty.

He is a true RF icon.  The place wont be the same without him.

I will light a candle for him and for the family.  He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh, that is such a shame.  My last time at the Beacon they weren't very busy and I had the opportunity to chat with JC for several minutes.  He was a real class act who deserved to be the most famous man in Spartanburg.  He will be much missed and the Beacon won't be the same without him.

I agree totally with BB.  Hopefully the Legend of the Beacon will recover and come back to his rightful place in RF History.
Love the O R  and the Ice Cream at the Beacon.

Doesn't look like there's going to be a recovery, sadly. J.C.'s family has taken him off artificial support.

He really will be much missed.  Looking back at the photo I took of him last year,

he does look thin and frail, but that doesn't make this any less of a surprise.  The Beacon will not be the same and I'm not completely sure I would ever go back, since he was the main draw.  Not doubt there is now other people doing the calling, but it should always be JC's image on the sign.

I am so very sorry to learn of this. A big part of the Beacon experience has always been being waited on by J.C. and hearing him call out my order to the kitchen team. My plans for my upcoming North Carolina trip in October have included a visit to the Beacon, but now my enthusiasm for a meal there has dropped considerably. I'll still probably go but it just won't be the same. R.I.P. to a true Roadfood icon.

    CB-
I remember when you brought a JC Stroble bobblehead to the Charleston Glee Club for the gift exchange.  A stroke of genius, for sure.  I wanted to win that so bad.  The last two visits to The Beacon I have asked if they sell the bobbleheads and was told they were discontinued.

Unfortunately based on my experience with the quality of the food,  I do not share   the same enthusiasm as others did with the Beacon, however that doesn't change the fact that  I am truly  sad to hear of the passing of a Roadfood icon...

WJ - I too was underwhelmed by the food at the Beacon, but it was for the experience that I would go back for.  He will be missed so very much!
