As part of a set of food-related songs on WMBR this afternoon while we finishing up the big meal (went off without a hitch, incidentally), the DJ played Jonathan Richman's "Double Chocolate Malted," which I haven't heard in ages. Made both me and my wife crave one!

Johnathon Richmans Double Chocolate Malted should be manditory listening for anyone making a milkshake/malted!! (Favorite line, Customer Service, very important!!) Thanks, gotta dig that one out of my tapes!!

I myself prefer a Malted, but shakes are ok too!! I am actually a shake master, and I love to mix interesting flavors together. Once I made a Sweetart shake for a friend, using phosphate, tangy sweet creamy good ness!!

A fave MALT I came up with is Pineapple Cherry Malt, it's like drinking a cold class of Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Delish!!

Another good one, and it is more a meal than a shake is a Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Malt. I made this one once for a friend also, and it is a staple now, just so good, and you actually feel like you've eaten something healthy!! (DUPED, but in a good way!)

Man am I glad I'm working at the Resteraunt tonight!! WATCH OUT BLENDER!!!!

I prefer a malt over a shake whenever available but I find it seldom available. Almost exclusively chocolate. Although the root beer malt sounds intriguing.

A variation on the egg cream in the Chicago area is the phosphate. These are getting rare these days with the demise of the soda fountain. Just mix chocolate (or any flavor) syrup with seltzer. When I was a kid, we would order these in delis. Easy to make at home and just as good.

I prefer them at Ronnies on Rt 20 in Auburn Mass. Ronnies is a true roadfood legend. The founder passed a few years ago, but his family still does a great job. Seasonal. No credit cards.

On Saturday, I had my first chocolate malt in years. It was from Moxley's Ice Cream. Man, was it good!
I will drink a shake if no malt is available.

One of the best places to have a shake is Cheeburger Cheeburger. It's a chain of you guessed it, cheeseburger joints, mostly in the Florida area. They have about 50 types of thick shakes. you name it, they'll make it!

When I was a kid all the local drive-ins had malts. When McDonald's came to town they all went to shakes. Pretty soon you couldn't find a malt. You also soon couldn't find a local drive-in either.

I see (around here) malts are making a comeback but they think they're so 'special' that they charge $4 for one.

As a kid growing up in Brooklyn,(in the 50s and 60's) we all had Malteds at our local ice cream parlor, or neighborhood candy store with a fountain. I didn't know what a shake was until I became an adult. The memories are so great, having the guy behind the fountain mix the chocolate ice cream, milk, syrup and malted powder for an incredible treat. If he was really nice, he would top it off with the extra still in the blender. And, as an additional surprise, if you got on his good side, he would throw in a pretzel rod!

                    Those were blissful days!

The shakes/malts are reason enough to visit Steak 'n' Shake. There is nothing like the sound of the cherry rattling around the to go cup when you have reached the bottom. As far as I know, this is unique to them.

Malts, hands down. Around SoCal though, one has to some snoopin and poopin to find a place that serves one.

I love vanilla milkshakes and malteds, but when in the mood, try a butterscotch milkshake.... yum.

                              Remember Bond's Ice Cream?

Remember the Bond's Ice Cream stores of Northern, N.J,? They made the best ice cream, milk shakes, hamburgers, sundaes(i.e. Pig's Dinner), sodas and of course the Awful Awful. You had to drink 3 at one sitting in order to get one free. There was a list of all the people who had been able to do that feat. How many were you able to drink at one sitting?

There will be a dedication ceremony for a plaque honoring the memory of Bond's Ice Cream on Sat. Oct. 6th at 4 P.M.. The ceremony will be at the old site of Bond's Ice Cream on Valley Road in Montclair, N.J.. Come and reminisce about the food, the good old days and old friends.

                              Hope to see you there!

I'm a malt man all the way. Grew up on the west side of Chicago in the late 40's and worked the soda fountain at my dad's drug store making real malts. Little did I know that one day I would be living in Racine, WI, home of the Horlick's Malted Milk Corporation. http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/museum/exhibits/horlicks/

I love them both and probably go 50/50. Depends on my mood. Coincidentally, I just made myself a black and white malt within the past hour. I guess that would be called a chocolate malt in much of the country. Had it right from the metal cup.

When I grew up in Indianapolis I didn't know there was such a thing as a milk shake. Malted was the only thing you could get even at the Dairy Queen. So malt it is. Culver's gives you a choice.

It's sad the number of times I've asked for a malt at various ice-cream establishments, and the staffer just looks at me funny, or -- better yet -- s/he'll ask the manager if they sell malts! Shakes are fine, but I prefer malts. I always loved Ovaltine as a kid, and as an adult I still crave that malty flavor.

I like a hot fudge malt, they seem to make a decent one at Culvers.

I can't abide malt. I therefore never order malteds.

While I like chocolate milkshakes, I order fruit flavours such as cherry, pineapple or lemon-lime whenever possible.

Incidentally, I find milkshakes turn out best on my home model Hamilton Beach milkshake mixer when a bit of corn syrup is added. This thickens the mixture as well as sweetens it.
