Favorite Christmas cookies?? Sun, 11/14/04 3:07 PM (permalink)
What are you favorite Christmas cookies?? Or is there a near by bakery that you just can't resist??
I will ALWAYS love the cut out cookies the best. I do remember family favorites like Almond cresent cookies covered with powdered sugar and thimple nut cookies with Jam in the center. Ohh yes, cranberry bars too....i could have passed on those actually.
Of course the tradtion was having a homemade yule log cake after Sunday midnight mass and opening ONE present for each of us.
Funny, we never made gingerbread cookies........

    1. Sand tarts - our name for very thin rolled cookies decorated either with colored sugar or cinnamon and finely chopped walnuts. I have to hid them in tins in my car trunk so some are left for Christmas.
    2. Dew Drops - buttery drop cookies with chopped raisins and maraschino cherries and almond extract instead of vanilla.
    3. Oatmeal twins - a giant batch of oatmeal cookies, half with chopped candied fruit and walnuts and half with chopped dates and grated orange rind.

Those are the 3 I make most often for the holidays. During the rest of the year, I make a lot of refigerator cookies, the dough rolled into logs and frozen so I can slice off a few whenever we want fresly baked cookies.

I've never made gingerbread cookies either.

Call me weird, but I actually like pfeffernusse (sp.?). Even though they usually have the consistency of a Chore Boy sponge.

Biscotti is great any time of year, but I like to crank up the oven at the holidays and make a big batch to give away.

My favorite all time Christmas cookies were my Aunt Etta's sugar cookies. Now you have to understand that my Aunt was an extremely compulsive lady, to understand the effort that went in to her cookie baking. Anyway she made the world's best sugar cookies, by the time Christmas came she would have several large UTZ chip cans full of cookies. Now this may not sound like such a feat to some, but one thing I didn't mention was that her cookies were almost thin enough to read the paper through. Trust me, I'm not exagerating here! After I began doing my own baking, I asked her how she got them soooo thin, how did she roll it out, then cut it & then, most important of all, get it on the cookie sheet without tearing it apart??!! She told me it was really quite simple, she rolled each cookie out seperately on the cookie sheet, cut the dough & removed the excess. As my mind filled with the memories of those cans of cookies over the years, I just reeled at the thought of her endurance!!

I remember the Anise flavored cookies with the red and green sugar, but my favorite of all were the little Chrome ball bearings that we always used. Still can't believe we ate something that was dipped in chrome.

They aren't Christmas cookies--just my favorite cookies that I make at Christmas and whenever I crave them: oatmeal chocolate chip with pecans (or walnuts).

A dear old man who used to live on my street in my hometown made the most wonderful persimmon cookies with walnuts and raisins.. I've never been able to duplicate them...they just don't taste the same.. thanks for the memories, Sully.. rest in peace my friend.

When I was a kid my grandmother made these little pecan cookies that were to die for and I have no idea what they are called and have never found a recipe that duplicates them. They literally melted in your mouth and had finely chopped pecans. My other grandmother made really good sugar cookies that she would painstakingly decorate with colored frosting and little candies. I usually make oatmeal chocolate chip with nuts, sugar cookies and snickerdoodles for the holidays.

My sister, my mother and I all have certain cookies that we make each year. We have fruit cake cookies, peanut butter cookies, Oatmeal Raisin
cookies, cranberry nut cookies, and chocolate oatmeal peanut butter cookies, plus a nut roll and several kinds of fudge. Also, I like to make nutty logs, which are a snickerdoodle type rolled in powdered sugar while they are hot out of the oven.

My mom's datenut pinwheels will always be my favorite treat for the holidays. A reasonably close second would her Kris Kringles.

Linzer hearts, pecan tarts, almond crescents and Swedish stars.

Speaking of Swedish and bakeries. The Swedish Bakery on Clark St. in Chicago has very good baked goodsb, especially the Swedish cookies.

Something else that we like to have each year. We go to Winston Salem, NC which is a couple hours drive from our house and buy Moravian cookies is several different flavors-We also like to get the tea cakes which are baked fresh in their brick ovens. Its a nice little trip especially if you stop at Tanglewood to see the Christmas Light Displays.

Being of a non-Christian persuasion there aren't a lot of Christmas cookies around my house. But when I was a kid, my best buddy's mom used to bake a truck load of them. They all seemed to be butter cookies that she would squeeze through a frosting tube (?) and then decorate with various sprinkles, etc. They were so good, we couldn't stop eating them. She would get so mad when we ate so many. But, wait, isn't that a compliment?

My favorites didn't start out as Christmas cookies, but every time I made them I got such a great response, I eventually started making them to give as Christmas gifts, so now whenever I make them my kids always say "It smells like Christmas in here." They're little shortbread-type cookies with milk chocolate chips, dusted with confectionary sugar. When made right (not overcooked), they literally melt in your mouth. I usually make the first batch on Thanksgiving night, and by about the week before Christmas I'm making 2 or 3 batches a day, between the gifts and the ones my kids snag off the cooling rack before they make it into the gift tins.

Another favorite is a recipe I discovered a few years back - Again, a butter cookie, but with mint extract and red or green food coloring, and a Hershey's kiss on top. They came out sooooooo good, and also got raves, but after 2 or 3 years I lost the recipe and couldn't make them any more. BUT - this summer, while doing a serious kitchen clean out, EUREKA! I found the recipe. So I'm excited about bringing those back into our Christmas tradition.

Primarily because after eight years of inactivity on the thread, most people have long since moved on and the person being addressed won't see the response.

I'll second sand tarts, sometimes called cocoons when rolled
                                                  chocolate chip meringue cookies

pecan lace - these are my favorite, very large, paper-thin with finely chopped pecans, chewy

pfefferneuse- Kristi, I've never found them to be too dry, just love all the spices in them

Italian fig cookies (cucidati)  these I associate more with St. Joseph's Day, but a co-worker brought some to work that her sister's family had made and they were wonderful

Those cute little pressed cookies in the shapes of wreaths, camels, etc., spell Christmas to me.  No one seems to make them at any other time of year, even though there are many other "molds" that can be used in other seasons.
