I'm going to Kentucky this weekend and really looking forward to at least one Hot Brown!

I enjoyed the original one at the Brown Hotel a few years ago, but haven't been back for a while.  They serve good ones at the Science Hill Inn in Shelbyville
http://www.sciencehillinnky.com/
and at Beaumont Inn (both in the dining room and Old Owl Tavern) in Harrodsburg,
http://www.beaumontinn.com/
so I'll have an opportunity to have one each day I'm there if I choose to.

That said, my current favorite is at the Greyhound Tavern in Fort Mitchell, KY.  It's a great lunch stop on the way to/from CVG airport. But this trip, I'm not flying via Cincinnati, so it won't be possible to get there.   http://greyhoundtavern.com/greyhound-tavern-menu.html

My one and only Kentucky Hot Brown was not in Kentucky but the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota. So I have no idea how it compares. The Hot Brown will be on my list when we do the Kentucky Bourbon Trail this May.

DavyDD:  I have no idea how it tasted but it looks good.  I had the original with the Glee Club in Louisville a few years ago and it was outstanding but the presentation of this was better.

I've had a few in Louisville, the best of which was across 4th Street from the Brown Hotel at the Bluegrass Brewing Company.  Absolutely superb!!

Got to spend a night at the Brown Hotel in Louisville recently. The sandwich/casserole was invented there. Their take is impressive.

I'll probably be demoted to junior cheeseburger for this, but my all-time favorite was at Darfon's, near the airport in Nashville, down the street from Ellendale's.

They'd better not demote you. While I love the Hot Brown at the Brown Hotel, the best one I've ever had was at the Executive Inn West across from the fairgrounds in Louisville back in 1987 during a Bassmaster Classic tournament.

Michael,   they already demoted me once.  Remember when I used to be a super-duper roquefort-stuffed rotisserie sirloin?

Wasn't that because they refused to accept your claim that there were round ice cubes in Nashville?

If it helps, you will always be super-duper roquefort-stuffed rotisserie sirloin to me!

Right! I want my rotisserie sirloins stuffed with gorgonzola.

I'm calling Columbo and Banacek to solve the mystery.

I'm very very allergic to such cheese.

Ate at several joints between Madison and Vevay this summer. Didn't find a one. But I did find one good Breaded Pork Tenderloin sandwich in Madison. No consolation. No.

There's way too much off-topic conversation here. A Hot Brown is a sacred sandwich. Find somewhere else to play.

Last spring I had this hot brown at the Old Talbott Inn in Bardstown, Kentucky. Old Talbott Inn has been in business since 1779.

Kinda funny...I love Welsh Rarebit especially with Bacon Strips added, but I don't care for the Hot Browns. It must be the cheese they use?? I have had them several places, including Lynn's Paradise, and the Brown Hotel...They're ok, but I seldom order them when there are other selections to choose from. That's one Kentucky specialty that hasn't gained my favor.

Several months ago, in response to an e-mail notice from one of our favorite restaurants, Chef Point Cafe, that they were now offering such, we went seeking the legendary "Hot Brown".  It was truly wonderful - and wondrfully different with its unusual (and strange) combination of seemingly disparate components..

That said, it's the last one I will ever have.

At nearly 65, my "labs" are fantastic and my resting pulse is less an my age.  And, I want to keep it that way!

Ann, the Stouffer's Welsh Rabbit is terrific. When I make my own, or when I use the Stouffer's, I place a couple of rashers of bacon (usually peppered) and a couple of tomato slices atop the toast points and then top it with the rabbit. This was the way they served it at the Press Club of Charleston back in the '60s, and I fell in love with it then.

(For cheating purposes, Campbell's cheddar cheese soup, with some dry Coleman's mustard and a touch of Worchestershire sauce makes for a Welsh rabbit winner.)

I grew fond of it while working for HoJos a long time ago. They had canned Cheese sauce  that they used for the Rarebit. It was outstanding when used over toast corners and a pile of crispy Bacon.

As I've noted above, I am a huge Kentucky Hot Brown fan.

A few weeks ago, I was at a luncheon at the Bar Americain in NYC.  It's a Flay property.

This was a luncheon for a group of conference speakers in a private dining room -- and we've had lunch there before at previous conferences.  Usually, the food is pretty good.  They include excellent corn sticks in the bread basket, for example.

This year, one of the entree choices was a Kentucky Hot Brown, so of course I ordered it.  Unfortunately, it was not very good.  The turkey was real (if sliced a bit too thick for my taste)  and the bacon strips were real, so that wasn't the problem.  But the cheese sauce was much too thick and almost curdled.  The guy sitting next to me (who had never had a Hot Brown, and had ordered it at my suggestion) thought it was disgusting.  I was very sorry he had such an experience with his first Hot Brown, because now it might be his last!

This is a link to the restaurant web site, but I can't get the menus to load.

If you ever get to Pittsburgh, I hope you try one of our versions of the Hot Brown, called a Turkey Devonshire.  If you like one, chances are you will like the other!
