I can't remember the exact 1st album, but my sister & I were big Motown fans. We had Four Tops, Temptations, etc. Loved the Beach Boys. I just got a new Beach Boys greatest hits CD and I made sure that it had the version of "Barbara Ann" with all the laughing and backgroud talk.
Also, the Righeous Brothers, love, love, love them!!

For those who were (are?) Motown fans.......
Today the Wall Street Journal had a 1/2 page piece on the Dozier-Holland team that wrote so many Motown hits. I always thought it was 2 people, but in fact it was Mr Dozier and 2 Holland Brothers.

I remember a DJ saying that there are 1000s of great singers of the rock era, but only a few dozen great writers. The Dozier-Holland team is certainly on that short list.

Interesting thread. Surprised at how young most of you are unless perhaps you didn't buy your first album until you were in your 20's. Also interesting how hip you all were in that no one admits to being sucked into any bubble-gum groups or the like.
Being a trumpet player from age 10, I'm sure my first album buy was probably Al Hirt or Maynard Ferguson. Miles came later. I do remember one significant purchase, though. Late 1966, Loring AFB in Caribou, Maine in the Base Exchange, I bought my first album as an Airman with some of the meager funds Uncle Sam doled out to those of my lowly rank (less than $100 a month!). I'm pretty sure it cost $1 and I was definitely influenced by the fact it was a double album (one of the very first, I believe Blonde On Blonde was the first) and much attracted to the "far-out" cover. I rushed back to the barracks and got the guy across the hall to play it. To say it caused a ruckus would be an understatement. Not one person had ever heard the album or the artist. Some walked out including the guy who owned the stereo, but those that remained may very well remember the experience to this day. The album was "Freak Out" by The Mothers of Invention.

Either "Introducing Herman's Hermits" (the red album) ... or, The Beatles' "Second Album" ... not sure which.

It was probably a Monkees album, I am ashamed to admit...

I can't recall which album I first bought vs what was bought for me as presents, but I hope to heaven mine wasn't "The Chipmunks sing the Beatles' Hits" or Allan Sherman's "My Son the Nut"!

Really, my older brothers were the ones buying rock albums - I was the weirdo buying James Bond soundtracks and electronic music.
