We tried the Wolf's BBQ out east near I-169. It was poor minus! Now closed. I hear the Wolfs on 1st Ave/Street is much better. However when we are in that area we head for Owensboro,KY less than 30 min away!!

Were I to find myself in Evansville, which I occasionally do, I would head to Turoni's and have a very fine pizza.

Last year I stopped at Smokey's Southern Barbeque in Chesterton after taking a detour off I-94. I ordered a jumbo pulled pork sandwich ($4.25) and a half slab of baby backs ($10.95) for carry-out. Both were very good, even after being reheated in the microwave. Good sides, too - I chose red beans & rice and pasta salad.

I recommend Smokey's if you are passing Michigan City and are hungry for something other than fast food. Smokey's is located on U.S. 20 between exits 26 and 34 off I-94. It probably added 15 minutes to normal my trip on I-94.

The best ribs in the Evansville area are those cooked by various church and charity organizations, although quality will vary from one to another. There are places in Evansville such as Shyler's (Green River Road), the Bar-B-Q Barn (Diamond Avenue), the Bar-B-Q Shack (First Avenue in the North Park shopping center) that turn out decent if not outstanding ribs. The latter two also serve brisket. Other than that, the options are the chain restaurants.

For my money, though, the best place I've ever found for barbecue in Indiana is South Street Smokehouse in Lafayette, about three hours north of Evansville. I had dinner there, and it was so good that I stayed overnight and had lunch there the next day. It is featured on this site.

Anyone know of any company which sells sliced BBQ pork, in a thin BBQ Sauce - sort of sweet/sour? Use to be in jars in grocery stores in Evansville. AZ Smoker

In Indianapolis, there are a couple of good places. GT South's BBQ which is off of south Emerson and I465 and Dick's Bodacious BBQ. Dick's has a couple of locations, one is downtown near the circle and one is in Fishers off of 116th St. They both have smoked meat that is pulled or you can just get the meat without it being pulled. I'm addicted to both places. Great food.

When I think Indy BBQ, I think of King Ribs, although it has been a while since I have been there. How do the two places you mention compare to King Ribs?

Jan and I stop at the King Ribs out on Rt 40 near the 465 on the east side when we are headed to and from Michigan (via I-69) We have stopped at the one oon the west side (in Speedway I think) but found that the east side was easier to get to!
They do a nice job on the ribs and Rib Tips !!

There's a new BBQ place in Southeast Indiana. It is located in Aurora, IN. The food is fantastic and the service is excellent. The rib meat is so tender it falls right off the bone. The full slab is so big my husband couldn't finish it, and that is saying something!!!

A closer view of the Pulled Pork, Big Daddy's sauce is a mix of sweet and sour, it is a thinner sauce, first taste is of the sweetness, then you notice the tingle.

I was going to post a picture of the smoked ham sammie, but it was blurry and actually dry and disappointing.

The two places mentioned, as well as Hogshead in Broad Ripple, do slow-smoked Southern style BBQ. A lot of the black-owned local joints such as King, BBQ Heaven, Rubens, do grilled BBQ instead of smoked...it's good, but NOT what Southerners think of as BBQ. Not sure of the cultural reasons for the different cooking styles. Judge's is a delicious exception to this (locations in Haughville and at the City Market).

Hank's Texas Brisket in Indy (on MLK by Crown Hill) serves up INCREDIBLE brisket, and killer side dishes. It's take-out only and it's just delicious.

While I have not tried the ribs yet, I do frequent the BBQ Barn on Diamond Ave in Evansville. It is located in an old Bonanza Building that has been remodeled. I really enjoy the pulled pork and also the brisket. sides leave a little to be desired, but I am there for the Q

I've written about Evansville, Indiana's Bar-B-Q Barn on another thread. Their barbecue is average for the Evansville area. I prefer their vinegar-based sauce to the sweet and smoky variety, but both are decent.

However, I've been spoiled on the Kentucky barbecue across the river in Kentucky, where--as a rule--sauce is not needed. Barbecue traditions are just different in Indiana. That's why South Street Smokehouse in Lafayette, Indiana just knocked me off my socks. It was closer to the barbecue I had been used to eating.

Coming back to Evansville, Indiana barbecue, for my money the smoked chicken at the Bar-B-Q Barn on Diamond Avenue far surpasses the flavor of the barbecue served there. In my opinion, it's the star of the menu. It's the only time I've ever gone into a barbecue restaurant and found the chicken was better than the barbecue.

I stopped at South Street Smokehouse for lunch this past Wednesday and the rib tips and chicken I ordered were pretty good.  The sauce on the tips wasn't too sweet and both meats had what I perceived as some notes of vinegar and pepper, but what I really liked were the beans.
