I prefer Templeton, but probably because I have a free connection. It's almost too good to mix, though.
We need to get together for lunch sometime.

Davydd, I take my bourbon the same way. I have some nice bar tools but really only make cocktails for company. I've convinced myself that adding sugar to my hootch on a regular basis is not sustainable.
I'll usually grab a filtered water cube from the tray and put it in the tumbler, measure out three ounces of whiskey, and let it sit for a few minutes. I try and make that last a couple of hours. If I have more than that, all bets are off and I become a danger to myself and the contents of the pantry. Some folks get the munchies when they smoke, some of us get the whiskey munchies...

Right you are, sir. Made in Lawrenceburg...I met the Templeton boys at a "distillers convention" in Madison, WI. I was a concierge at the hotel where it was held and became good friends with Scott and Keith. They send me an occasional bottle and stay in touch. Lets just say I did them a small favor. That being said, there is no way I would pay close to $50 a bottle. If it can be had this is my favorite rye.

Yeah, I wouldn't turn down free Templeton. I don"t know how it differs from the other ryes that come out of Lawrenceburg, but I believe they all have the same mashbill. I've had a bunch of them, the Redemption is young and fine for mixing.
I'll have to look for that Canadian. We just moved from Texas and I'm still discovering things here that were previously unavailable. I always wanted to try Alberta Premium but it seems it stays in Canada.
Have you seen Alberta Springs in the states?

Templeton Rye is an Iowan spirit. I meet with a group of fellow Class B van RVers at socials every year from around the country. One member died a couple of years ago and his favorite spirit was Templeton Rye. So now every time we get together Templeton is our unofficial official toasting drink.

It's bottled in Iowa. They may age some of it there. The LDI I've been referring to?

The whole Al Capone thing, the "family recipe"…like I said, a good product but a better story.

True, as stated, for the most part. I've been told that they have a distillery in Templeton and SUPPOSEDLY the bottle Keith gave me about five years ago was totally distilled and bottled in Templeton. He said they still produce some there for the "locals". The rest arrives by tanker from LDI. The kind of shoots down the "small batch" story. Anyway, I still believe that excellent marketing can only sell the first bottle.

Templeton is about ten dollars a bottle more around me than Rittenhouse, and it's not ten dollars a bottle better.

That's funny....I remember in the HBO series The Wire (filmed around Baltimore) that they were drinking that in many of the bar scenes. I thought it was Kentucky rye, but realized I was thinking of Pikeville, KY and not Pikesville, MD. Then I find out that it's really distilled in Kentucky! Confusing.

It's very much a Maryland brand albeit distilled in Kentucky. I've never found it anywhere else. Fortunately I live close to the Maryland border.

You're right...I used to spend a lot of time in St. Mary's County (MD) and my friend's Dad drank it. I grew up very near where this great bourbon was initially produced in Virginia.

Unfortunately, Pikesville has grown in popularity and the price has risen (along with inflation) from $7.99 to $13 or more.

Pikesville is my favorite Rye, even over Knob Creek Rye and the new Dickel Rye.
