I say monitor the airfares to Germany and Austria! You could get there and back for under 500 and you can not get more authentic than actually being there... Yum!

There used to be a Karl Ehmer franchisee across the street from Zum Stammtisch. Good that a butcher shop is returning to the area.

I arrived here from an unsuccessful search for a youtube version of Friesenlied that could compare with the beautiful singing of that German song by Carl, the singing waiter at the Sunrise Village Restaurant on Sunrise Highway on Long Island, NY, at the wedding receptions of my sister (1949) and myself (1950). Each time he sang it, so beautifully, in both high German and low, my father, a 1929 immigrant, would sing along, with tears in his eyes. There is no version even half as desirable as what Carl provided. Anyone old enough to remember him?

Just came back from a couple of days in Saratoga Springs, NY. Lots of fun at the race track (I came out ahead!) Had dinner at the Spa Brauhaus in nearby Ballston Spa. Theyare not usually open on Mondays or Tuesdays, but because it was racing season, they are open 7 days. Family owned and operated, and it looks like it's been there forever. It's outside of town, and a little difficult to find, but even though only a few tables were filled, the food was excellent. They bring a tureen of soup to your table (it was barley soup on our night), and hot crusty bread. My husband's sauerbraten had a lighter gravy, but it was very tender. I felt like steak, which was smothered with mushrooms, just as I like it. The red cabbage was sweet and tangy, and the spaetzle was all buttery goodness. We'll defintely go back next year (hopefully the family will keep it going!)

Well our one German restaurant called Cafe Creme didn't make it. It was open a couple of years but don't think it did a very good business. I noticed about 6 months ago they started offering coupons in the local paper, around here that seems to be a sure sign they are in trouble.

I am in Bellevue, Ne about 20 miles south of Omaha. We have a really good German restaurant called Zum Biergarten. It is run by the daughter of the couple who owned a real beloved little German one here called Edelweiss. Edelweiss was within walking distance of my home, so we knew it well. It was sad to see them retire. I would say Zum is sometimes only good, often better than good. But, from what my German friend has said, authentic. It is often quite busy as we have an old German population here in and around Omaha. Plus, we are right near Offutt AFB, so we see military looking for the German food they found overseas.

Another German restaurant bites the dust--this time it's Scharf's Schiller Park in Buffalo, NY: http://www.buffalonews.com/business/article933824.ece This is the last of the restaurants in Buffalo dedicated to German cuisine, though Ulrich's (near the hospital corridor near downtown) is still open and has a few German dishes.
