Blackie's House of Beef in Wash DC - closed?? Fri, 02/8/08 12:06 PM (permalink)
We happened on this place on our trip to DC about 3 years ago. What a find! It had such a history, incredible ambience and the food was excellent. So why last night, after booking another trip to DC (so I can go to Blackie's again), do I find on Google that even after winning multiple awards, it's gone out of business!!??

Does anyone know the story behind this? I'm heartbroken...It was a restaurant I would happily die in. I'm big on atmosphere and ambience, and this place had it for me, to a tee!

This was about 2 or 3 years ago. I used to get drinks there after work. The owners, it stayed in the family some 50 years, decided to focus away from restaurants and just on hotels, I think. They sold all the stuff they had at that location including a New Orleans themed bar with a really good happy hour for cheap food and drink.

Bummer...any suggestions of other places I might not want to miss, now that you know what I like...?

I would say, don't miss the Orleans House, but that just closed too. Whsat do you value more...great steak or the history and ambiance. Dc is up to it's neck in steak houses. How long will you be here for?

If you are going for history. The Palms is still here in Dupont. Political greats on the walls smaller. Pricey of course. Caucus Room the same.

To mix things up, There are great steaks at Ceiba and Arcadiana, but they are not primarily steak houses. Still great food. A lot of the steak houses are chains, so while good, it can be had elsewhere and is easy enough to find the Morton's, Charlie Palmer's, Smith & Wollensky, or Ruth's Chris's.

Old Ebbit is a DC standard and has been here a while. Good for seafood. Tends to always feel bustling and overcrowded.

I don't know what I love more: good food or good atmosphere. Some places have both, but in the absence of one, it better have the other or it'll never see me again. I love steak, poultry, fish, seafood, pasta; hot dogs, sandwiches, soup, salad, beer, wine. Just don't do sushi.

I'm writing these suggestions down, while I drool. Oh...it's lunchtime - no wonder.

Yup. Blackie's and the contiguous Lulu's (named after the wife of the founder of Blackie's) shut its doors for good a couple of years ago. Blackie's made it to actually 60 years of service but when said founder, Ulysses G. "Blackie" Auger, Sr. (and, seriously, why don't people name their babies Ulysses these days ) died in 2004, Mr. Auger's adult children ran (some say into the ground) the places for a while but, apparently, landed a deal that had them benefiting from the sale of the entire building in D.C. housing both Blackie's and Lulu's.

I know that one of these "children" was an executive for USA Management, a hotel management firm at the time, and that atop both Blackie's and Lulu's was a Marriott Hotel.

                FYI.

Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday, is simply not the same without LuLu's!

I remember my family dining at Blackie's House of Beef back in 1966, I think it was (iow, some ungodly number of years ago ... LOL). We remembered that dinner fondly for years - it was unusual for us all to go out to dinner, especially to a really nice sit-down restaurant--I have 4 brothers, so it was expensive for 2 adults and 5 kids.

I had the most fabulous anniversary dinner there in 1976! The service was just incredible not to mention the food! I'm headed to DC next month for a convention & so hoped Blackie's was still there! It will be missed.

I loved Blackie's and miss it along with Mel Krupin's and both incarnations of Duke Zeibert's - especially Krupin's beautiful downstairs dining room (remodeled from Paul Young's) which was featured in the Briget Fonda movie "Point of No Return".

The one thing you couldn't miss on Blackie's menu was printed in bold type at the bottom of each page:  WE DO NOT SERVE COCA COLA PRODUCTS!  I'd love to know the story behind that.

One evening when Mel was about to seat us he said "That's Sam Donaldson over there".  I asked him to move us away saying, "I sat near him a few weeks ago at the Prime Rib and I could hardly hear the conversation at my table."  Mel laughed and said that he understood.  Our new seat was by Fred Graham, a soft-spoken Southern Gentleman.

Those were the days (geeze, geeze).

Along with all the tall windows and various ferns and plants I remember this from Blackie's: http://www.morebetterantiques.com/decor/fireplace_mantle.php

I also remember that Blackie for a few years took over the old Valle's Steakhouse in Springfield.  That building was very near and somehow resonated with all the traffic on 95/395/495 and actually had a constant vibration that you could feel through your feet.

They also had a nightclub on the premises which I remember well.

Yes, those were the days:  Jean-Pierre, Jean-Louis, Rive Gauche, Tiberio, Cantina d'Italia, The Company Inkwell ...  of all the "class joints" back then only The Prime Rib, l'Auberge Chez Francois, and The Inn at Little Washington still survive.
And all the "fern bars" (except for Clyde's) are gone as well.
