Pepperoni rolls Sun, 03/2/08 5:42 PM (permalink)
I was pretty shocked to find out that none of my friends outside of WV have heard of pepperoni rolls. I always thought it was a nationwide thing, but I guess it's regional. Do you guys have pepperoni rolls where you live? They are delicious. I am a freak about them in that I take out all but one slice of pepperoni, or if it's the kind with a stick of pepperoni I just pull it out. I only like the taste it leaves behind on the bread and the cheese that's baked inside :D

Here in CT the closest thing to a pepperoni roll would be stuffed bread. Italian bread stuffed with fillings. Pepperoni and cheese. Sausage and cheese. Spinach and Sausage. Broccoli and cheese. Just a few of the varieties

The best pepperoni rolls are hot and fresh baked with lots of mozzarella. You guys should try making homemade pepperoni rolls, it definitely isn't near the same as a real pepperoni roll, but around here this is really popular to make...buy the Pillsbury crescent roll dough, some mozz, cheddar, or pepperjack cheese, and some pepperoni rods. Here you can just buy rods of it but you might have to fashion some of of a big pepperoni stick. Wrap the dough around the pepperoni and cheese, bake, and yum! I'm not a big bread maker at all, but I imagine for anyone who is it would be very easy to wrap some fresh dough around pepperoni and cheese...

To some extent if you familiar with a calzone or even a pig in a blanket, you're familiar with a pepperoni roll.

I always get some whenever I drive through West Virginia. I really don't think they are that great, but I like to eat local. I will say, however, that they are usually the best option you can find at the gas stations. That being said, I've never been to the bakeries in Fairmount, so my experience doesn't include the stand bearers of the genre.

EWW gas station pepperoni rolls!!! NOO! Haha...you have to know the local bakeries out here to get a REAL pepperoni roll that doesn't taste like cardboard. Ray's Bakery here has ones that are to die for.

One of my grandzillas takes a flour tortilla, thin sliced deli pepperoni, and slicded american cheese, nukes it, rolls it up, and calles it a "pepperoni roll". Hey we are in Texas.

It's pretty much structured just like a calzone, but the roll, on a good pepperoni roll, is a sweet roll that is much fluffier than a calzone. Plus there's nowhere near as much cheese usually as in a calzone. But other than that, I would liken it most closely to a calzone.
Hehe...I don't know about the tortilla thing, but I am pretty much sickened by pepperoni except in the context of a pepperoni roll (which I usually remove all to most of the pepperoni anyway).

I had an excellent pepperoni roll over the weekend at the PA Dutch Farm Market in Annapolis over the weekend. It was bigger, a bit greasier and more flavorful than the ones I have typically bought in West Virginia. I will try and post a photo of it later.

With all the wonderful things for sale there, the line for the pepperoni rolls/pretzels was the longest.

I do find the pepperoni rolls that use thin sticks of pepperoni are much better than the ones that used sliced pepperonies that otherwise belong on a pizza.

Maybe someone here -- Mr. Mayor, are you moderating? -- can lead you two together. I think she doesn't have an internet connection right now... at least I hope that's the case; she hasn't posted here in quite awhile, and she underwent some serious medical problems.

I still lack that 45 on COLUMBIA, although I do have its follow-up, "Ain't I'm A Dog" (NOT a typo!). (That one came to me for free [it has a chip out, but plays perfectly -- albeit cracklingly] at Goodwill Industries in Madison Heights, Virginia in 2001!)

I was in WVa a few weeks ago and brought pepperoni rolls home to my family who had never heard of them but devoured everyone in a matter of minutes.

Im with Lee! I want to make my own though.

I offered to take my oldest grandzilla, who was 14 at the time, to lunch, anywhere she wanted to go. She picked Subway and prceeded to eat two FOOTLONG pepperoni subs! And a bag of chips! She is a skiney girl to. She always asks for a bag of pepperoni, a can of black olives, and a can of mushrooms for Christmas.

I'm not familiar with the pepperoni roll - BUT, do pine for the Pepperoni ball. When I was in college in western PA there was a place that delivered 'til all hours - they were 25 cents a piece. They took checks too - I remember writing a check for $1.25. slices of pepperoni, mozzarella cheese packed into dough about the size of a cue ball and deep fried. Ooooh were they good!

I have had only one pepperoni roll and that was at a convenience store in WV in route to Niagara Falls. I didn't know they existed until reading about them here on Roadfood. My choice of where to get one was probably not the best and my opinion is that it was like a rolled up piece of pizza or a calzone. Not bad but I wouldn't go out of my way for one.

I love the things. I probably wouldn't be so crazy for them if I went to West Virginia more than a few times a year, but it's one of the food related things I look forward to most - that and buying some Frozen Run Birch Beer, and the sausage gravy at the Waffle House in Flatwoods.

I find my self in Fairmont a few times a year. It always seems like if I leave Baltimore after work, i'm always ready to check into a hotel by the time I hit Fairmont.

Anyway, each time I'm there I always say that this will be the time I make it over to County Club Bakery and get some pepperoni rolls, but by the time I think about it i'm driving past Clarksburg.

On our Texas trips we stop at several of the Czech bakeries for the usual Kolache (sweet fruit filling)...but the Tex-Czechs also make a Sausage or Pepperoni Jalopena stuffed Kolache as well. All of the varieties we have tried have been delicious.
They look just like the rolls you have described and pictured in this thread.

BTW Freddies Pizza and Deli in Chicago's Cicero Suburb makes great Pepperoni Rolls (the size of 6" Sub Rolls), and long loaves of Pepperoni bread (same style only french bread length)

Pittsburgh is close enough to West Virginia that we can get some really good pepperoni rolls. My favorite is made and sold by the Mancini's location in the Strip District. Mancini's is Pittsburgh's premier bread maker. Here is a small article in The Trib about the operation.

                                                      http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_575692.html

Yet another "must eat" in the Strip District.

Here in Steubenville, Ohio,we can get them at Kroger. They do come from across the river (Weirton, WV) but they are really good. I keep a little container of marinara sauce in the fridge to dip them in. Microwave them for 30 seconds first. Mmmm!

Pechins Supermarket/Bakery has very delicious pepperoni rolls. They are 2 or 3 bite size.

Pechins is located on Route 119 between Uniontown and Connellsville, PA and is about 30 miles north of Morgantown WV. They also have an eating establishment adjacent to the supermarket.
