My Dad, and my older brother, were Dugan Men for many years in Northern NJ riding around in Divco trucks.
I was their Helper on weekends for a whole $2 a day!
I also worked part-time for Dugan's in the Ice Cream Freezer at the Branch in Hackensack.

Growing up in Yonkers (NY), we had access to both. I seem to remember a very good crumb cake from Cushmans, as well as very good cookies. But the Dugan guy brought the stuff right to your door...the first Enabler I ever met.

My dad was also a driver for Dugan's in Collingswood, NJ. On days I had off from school he would take me on his route to Long Beach Island, Lakehurst and other Jersey Shore stores. I too remember those little pies, cakes and snowballs that he took out of the stores because they were out of date. It didn't matter to me, I'd get in the back of the truck and make myself sick as they tasted just as good. After his route, while he was doing his paper work, I'd empty the bakery trays from the trucks for 25 cents each. I thought I was one rich little kid with a couple of bucks in my pocket. On the way home we'd stop at Jabbo's Tavern for his draft and my Coke. I sure do miss those days.

Take a Jersey Girl or Guy to understand my original post. Thanks for understanding the question I was asking-not all the "trucky stuff" I honestly thought I would be receiving these "memories forever"

Cheers to you. I haven't opened them as yet-but appreciate your "coherence!"

I vividly remember my Dugan's toy truck as a prized possession! I also remember the day my father told the Dugan's man we didn't need his services any longer. The Dugan's man was named Lenny, who happened to be deaf (we're pretty sure) and who was also able to lip read up to a certain level of proficiency. On that fateful day, Lenny came to the front door with his assortment of the best-smelling fresh bakery products, banged on the door and my father stepped out to speak with him. He told Lenny we didn't need him to stop by any more, but he wasn't quite getting the message. Every time my Dad said, "Lenny we just don't need you to stop here any
more.", Lenny replied with, "What.....what.....?" After several minute of mounting exasperation, Dad exclaimed, "Lenny, you're a fruitcake!!" Lenny quickly took out his book and said, "Oh, that'll take a special order!!" He still came by our house, of course.

On Staten Island we had Dugan's and Holterman's for baked goods, Weissglass delivered milk and dairy, an egg guy from somewhere in Somerset County, NJ, a seltzer truck and Charles Chips. For anyone interested here's a link to the Divco Club of America http://www.divco.org/

I think you may be intertwining Drake's Bakeries and Dugan's.

Drake's is now part of Interstate Bakeries and is based out of Wayne, New Jersey. They moved there directly from Clinton Avenue, near Park Avenue, in Brooklyn. There are a lot of refernces to Drakes on the web, including this:
                                      http://www.myrtleavenue.org/WallaboutCulturalResourceSurvey.pdf

Dugan's, at least in New York City, was based at 222nd Street in Queens Village, Queens. The old bakery site is now a pretty big bus garage site owned by NYC Transit, part of the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Google Dugans and Queens Village and you will get a lot of hits.

Dugans was Dugans   Not "intertwining anything.  Never heard of Interstate. Drakes was store bought-second rate items -still are in my opinion!
I'm glad all of you got so involved and excited about the Nostalgia...All I ever wanted when I posted the original query was a dupe-recipe for the icing on the Dugans Cup Cakes   Trucks not my interest.  Have Fun anyway and if anyone remembers the flat shiny vanilla or chocolate icing (not frosting) and knows how to make it please let me know.  Never knew where their factory was. Didn't much care.  :-)

Hi Have you ever lived in Brooklyn, NY when the Dugan truck delivered?  if so please let me know.  thanks

I don't remember seeing a Dugan's truck until we moved from Brooklyn to Long Island (Rockville Center and then to Baldwin Harbor around 1949-50.

I was replying to Wright-Holder's post, not yours. I think she was confusing Dugan's and Drake's in his/her mind. I knew people in my neighborhood who worked for Dugan's Bakery when I was growing up, and went to high school near Drake's Brooklyn bakery before the move to Wayne, NJ.

Frankly, I don't think any more of the Dugan's recipes are going to surface. The reason is that most of the people who worked at Dugan's are now DEAD. The last Dugan's bakery closed in 1966 with the bankruptcy of Noramco, and I don't it ever reopened after bankruptcy proceedings started.

This is primarily a site about restaurants and food prepared at home, not about recipes used by wholesale bakeries (and Dugan's was definitely a wholesale bakery.)

Even if some recipes were to surface, they might not taste the same since some of the ingredients, no doubt made for the commercial bakery market, may no longer be available.

<<On Staten Island we had Dugan's and Holterman's for baked goods>>

Holtermann's (two N's) is still around. They have about the best white bread (yes, white bread) I have ever had and it tastes nothing like the packaged cardboard you find in the supermarkets.
