Brooklyn's Krispy Comes To NJ ! Fri, 08/22/08 2:39 PM (permalink)
I just learned that the maker of my favorite NY Traditional Sicilian Pizza (i.e thick with lots of sauce and cheese, as opposed to Grandma style, i.e thin and not so much cheese) has opened a branch in Old Bridge New Jersey. I haven't been yet, but have put it on my "must Do" list.

This is good news indeed. I've Been going to the location on 13th Avenue in Dyker Hieghts Brooklyn for at least 30 years, both as a former local resident and for the past 25 years as a visitor from New Jersey.

Warning: Another website that plays loud music upon opening.

Ken that looks excellent. So their pizza is really good? I see it's only about 15 minutes from where I work. I definitely am going to have to try it

        Looks good!!

Funny, the NJ menu prices are more expensive than the prices in NY. That is rare.

Oddly, when it comes to pizza this isn't that unusual. I think the competition is so great in NYC that they are forced to keep prices in line with competition. I can get a slice for less in midtown than I can out on Long Island. With the costs of rent in NYC I don't know how they do it, but I know the suburban places must be making a killing!

The Brooklyn location is in a fairly low rent area and they've been there so long that they probably own the building, which keeps the costs down. Or maybe it's because there's so much competition for the pizza dollar in that area of Brooklyn.

Fattybomatty: The Sicilian is among the best I've ever had. Destination pizza. As in when we had a party at our house in NJ several years ago, I drove to Brooklyn that day to pick up 8 pies, to rave reviews from the Jersey people. The rest of thier pizzas are Brooklyn Good, but not outstanding, IMHO. How this will all translate to the Jersey location remains to be seen.

Denino's of Staten Island also recently opened a branch, in Aberdeen NJ, and that is every bit as good as the SI location, so there is hope.

I have mentioned Denino's pizza to someone looking for good pizza in North Jersey. It is so worth the toll. I live in Bayonne, and go there often.

I can also attest to the Denino's in Aberdeen being just as good. My sister lives there, and we insist on ordering it, whenever we go to see her.

Interesting, about the price variations. I never thought of the competition factor. I always notice Mc Donald's coupons that read $4.99 ($5.99 in Manhattan).

                      <<anyone try this place yet?>.

I did. Today. I ordered takeout, a square pie ($17.50) and two huge rice balls ($3.25 each). I'd rate the square pie just a notch below the Brooklyn version. Somehow it just didn't have that same bang as the one in Brooklyn. I'd really have to try the two side by side to be more specific. Very good for that area of NJ though.

The rice balls were good, but a little dry. I've never been a fan of thier side dishes, even at the Brooklyn store.

It does have the Brooklyn store beat in ambiance, nice subdued place to eat lunch. In Brooklyn there's usually chaos, i.e it's much busier, being on a main shopping drag with lots of foot traffic. The NJ version is in small strip mall, zero foot traffic.

Here in NC I have never heard of a rice ball. I ASSUME it is sticky rice formed in a ball but I have no idea what it would be flavored with. And does it usually accompany a pizza.

Or am I way off base?

They way they do it at the local pizzeria here (in Bayonne NJ), balls of rice with bits of sausage, and peas are rolled in bread crumbs, and deep fried. Seperate menu item from pizza, when ordering. You can eat both together, if you are hungry.

It is on the appetizer menu.

I'm bumping this thread because I went to the Brooklyn Krispy today after visiting my Mom (in assisted living nearby) with my daughter and her boyfriend. We got a whole sicilian pie to share.

                              What was I thinking??

The Brooklyn version is hands down better all around, especially the crust. It's true that it must have something to do with the NY water.

I had forgotten how good the original Brooklyn Krispy Sicilian pie really is, definatley among the best of that style in all of NY City.

They just opened in Freehold.  Don't really care for the name, but the pizza and food are fantastic.  tried another NY transplant a few weeks ago ( A & S in Howell), but Krispy is much better! A & S was an average pie and we even have others in the area that are better. Can't go wrong with Krispy!

In Milton, NC go to Millies.  Great pizza and other Italian foods.  In a rather non-descript looking building that belies the quality and price of the food.  It is close to the Virginia International Raceway.  From Danville, VA take US58 east to VA62 south to Milton.  Signs indicate direction to VIR and Milton.  After going thru traffic lite Millies is down the hill 100 yards on the left.  Pie here brings back memories of my youth in NJ/NY.

Another pizza place, believe it or not, is Costco.  We go to one in Winchester, VA and the pie is the best I have had since moving from NJ 51 years ago.  Pies are large, thin bottom crust, thick edge.  Whole pie about $10.00, slice $1.99 ($2.17 w/tax).  I get a slice every time I go in.
