New line of pies called Hartford Reserve at A&P - Wed, 10/15/08 9:22 AM ( #1 )
THere is a new line of fresh baked pies being introduced this week at A&P and other family banner stores.

They are called, Hartford Reserve, in honor of the co founder of the Great A&P, George Huntington Hartford.

Apple Pie is currently featured, prepared with 5 kinds of apples and a super flaky crust.

I have sampled it in the store, and it is really good, for a store bought apple pie.

I would say that it is as good as, or even better than a Baker Square pie.

Try one and let the others know what you think.

I saw this Apple Pie for sale yesterday at an A&P in Westchester County, NY. $8.99 for a 47 ounce pie. The blurb in the sale circular reads as follows: "Over 1 pound and 10 ounces of five varieties of apples in their natural juices. Trans fat free. Tastes like Mom used to bake." Unfortunately, no samples were being handed out here. Well, the A&P family banner stores were the ones selling english muffins fully baked in Hope, Arkansas by Southern Bakeries in their "fresh" in-store bakery departments. Once you get up to nine bucks, you might be better off spending a bit more and going to an independent baker, farm market, etc making pies with freshly peeled apples. After all, this is apple season right now in New York State.

Do they use freshly peeled apples in these pies, or factory cooked apples supplied in five gallon pails? I have been burned so many times with pretty-looking baked goods in faux in-store supermarket bakeries (such as the frozen donuts) that a high falutin name on a pie box does not sway me.

Jim, today A&P operates six food chains. A&P stores can be found as far north as Mystic, CT. The Super Fresh chain can be found as far south as Maryland. If the store's house brand is America's Choice, it is a A&P chain store.

I just received my sales circular in today's newspaper. The apple pie is on sale, starting Friday, for $4.99.

While I am a huff, A&P's newly purchased Pathmark chain had for years a trade name of "Baker's Oven" for their in-store baked goods. For some time now, dating back to before A&P completed the purchase of Pathmark, Pathmark has been selling in at least their smaller stores' in-store bakery departments factory-produced "Baker's Oven" pies. These sell for about $1.99-$2.49 on sale and $3.99 regular price. These are the typical apple-cherry-blueberry-pineapple-peach pies you see in faux in-store bakeries. Except these Baker's Oven pies come in sealed cardboard boxes, just like the pies from Table Talk and similar wholesale pie bakeries. Tactics like this make the term "fresh baked pies" meaningless. My mantra: "If in doubt, assume it came frozen from Rich Foods in Buffalo."

Edited to correct trade name.

I am a fan of A&P. I shop there all the time.

If I was going to spend more than a few bucks for a pie, make mine from Delicious Orchards, not the bakery section of A&P.

Lee, I know you are with me, on Delicious Orchards!
