A couple of Maine lobster roll notes having recently returned from the Pine Tree State:

(1)   Down East Books recently released the quasi-cookbook...

...a $ 14.95 read featuring lots of photos and a few recipes

including for Red's cocktail sauce, coleslaw and "Puff Dog" -- a

cheese and bacon stuffed hot dog then batter-fried.

(2)   And the July 25, 2010 issue of the...

...ran a listing of ten top rated Maine spots serving-up

the venerable lobster roll and including that produced by:

Red's (Wiscasset)

the Lobster Shack (Cape Elizabeth)

Bob's Seafood Restaurant (Windham)

Bayley's Lobster Pound (Scarborough)

the Lobster Dock (Boothbay Harbor)

Miss Brunswick Diner (Brunswick)

Nunan's Lobster Hut (Cape Porpoise)

Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster (South Freeport)

the Thirsty Whale (Bar Harbor)

and

the Camden Deli (Camden).

FYI.

Shain's of Maine (in Sanford, Maine) has an incredibly fresh and full lobster roll for just $5.99. Might be the best lobster roll value in the State.

I looked at the pictures of the lobster roll that Shain's has to offer for $5.99. The picture looks good, nice chunks of lobster on a toasted New England roll. It also looks like it does a better business selling ice cream. I wonder why the Lobster roll doesn't get review more. If the Lobster roll is good this would be the best value in New England..............pnwc

The Maine Lobster Lady "Winters" in Phoenix and "Summers" on Isle au Haut, Maine serving her island friends, and visitors to the most remote sector of Acadia National Park
An island version of The Maine Lobster Lady food truck is in the process of being built and will be stationed just west of the Ranger's Station, a quarter mile or so from the town landing. She hopes to be ready to serve by late June.
I helped her get started here in AZ a few years ago and she's going Gangbusters.

This is a classic New England sandwich best served on a regular ol' hot dog bun which I prefer grilled. (Pepperidge Farm is my favorite) I use big, meaty chunks of fresh lobster, no onion or herbs, and just a bit of lemon juice. I could eat this every day--if lobster wasn't so pricey!

I was in Maine last month.  The lobster was so cheap we ate  it  all the time.  There is some kind of lobster cootie coming up the coast toward Maine.  It is only suppose to effect the appearance of the shell with big lesions on them.  I happened to have one and It did effect the taste.  So keep your lobsters at home Connecticut!
I never got to Shanes in Sanford.  $5:99 is still the price. All the restaurants still rip you off with high lobster prices because they can. we have an rv so we get the lobsters and steamers cooked and eat them back at the campground.  Oh, and don't forget the fried clams and onion rings.  We also got lobsters and steamers in Hampton N.H. at the Fishermans coop.  The last nite we were in New England we had 21/2 lb lobsters @$5.99 a lb cooked.  The fresh calamari was $2:00 a  lb
Back in Florida now.  Fish sucks here, but Gulf shrimp(white) are delish.

Last month we ate one afternoon at the Maine Diner in Wells. I decided to try their "famous" lobster pie. And I'm here to tell you that is definitely the way to go.

Try it, I'll be you will agree with me.

Roz and I were in Portland, Boothbay and Freeport Maine last week.  We found several places that had 3 1 1/2 pound lobsters plus salad bar for $20.00.  Very very good.

Actually we left about a pound of lobster in the frige at the Residence Inn in Portland.  I hope the housekeepers enjoyed it.

That's really, really cheap.  Last week I called Commercial Lobster in Boston (where I used to work) and had two 2lb. lobsters sent to us.  I didn't ask how much.  I'm afraid to get my next credit card bill.    But it was worth it because they were delicious and lobster is one of Michael's favorite foods.
