Part 3 Sunday April 19 First thing in the morning, I headed to
Urth Coffee in West Hollywood for another stellar cup of rich dark roasted coffee...Located on funky- trendy Melrose Avenue, this is another one of my favorite coffee houses in the country...afterwards I was going to head to
Aguas Tijuana's Juice Bar in
Downey, located approximately 12 miles east of LA. When I got their they were closed! Their website indicates they were open on Sundays...I checked with the donut shop next door and the young lady told me that they had a minor flood that morning but were almost cleaned up and should be reopening that day but she wasn't sure when - There was no one in the store and I didn't know when they were planning to reopen so I drove back to my hotel for game plan # 2- I called the smoothie shop when I returned to my hotel and of course they were now open. I wasn't planning on returning that morning but they assured me they would be open Monday Morning....
I decided to head to
The Juices Fountain in Hollywood instead which was actually on the itinerary for Monday- so I simply switched the days around- besides I was really hungry (thirsty) for breakfast....
Juices Fountain has been in business for over 3 decades. Owned and operated by a family from Columbia. They offer smoothies, shakes, juices and healthy "Southern Cal" good for you sandwiches (think sprouts and avocado)
After looking at the menu, I wanted to try something a little different than what I had the day before...I decided to go with the Yogurt Delight..
The smoothie had yogurt, lo fat milk, papaya, banana and honey in it...
This tasted almost like a milkshake to me- Althought it was good, it just had too much of a yogurty-dairy taste- not what I'm looking for in a fruit smoothie...
After my healthy but filling breakfast I took a little stroll down the walk of fame...
and noticed Capitol Records in the foreground..
Hollywood appeared alot different than what I remembered 2 decades ago.... When I first visited it kinda reminded me of what Time Square in NYC used to be, now it just looked like LA's version of Jamaica Queens or Spanish Harlem...
I did come across this nice surprise....a
Sunday morning farmer's market....
Yes, I did end up buying one! What a bargain for a buck- fat free and sugar free too! There were some more interesting vendors too..
Well, they do say that LA is the land of Fruits and Nuts! After my little venture in Hollywood , I returned to my hotel for an hour or so and checked out-
It was now time for our official Sunday afternoon meet n greet at
Philippe Luckily I found on street parking one block away- free on Sunday!
although most of the details of our event can be found here...(thanks
Mar52!)
http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/Southern-California-Meet-n-Greet-Philippe-41909-m498615-p5.aspx I'll provide a brief recap with photos...
Many of the cities I visit have a landmark establishment I always need to return to when I visit...
In Memphis its Interstate BBQ, in Portland ME it's Gilbert's Chowderhouse in Miami its Puerto Sagua, well here in LA it's Philippe-
This is what "Classic" LA is all about...Sawdust on the floor and all..
You can even get your own Philippe's T Shirt and a jar of their spicy mustard
(sorry
Poverty Pete for forgetting yours)
After bracing another long line of hungry patrons...... I ordered this lamb dip- double dipped-
all this sandwich needs is just a hint of Philippe's spicy mustard. the tender meat was as smooth as butter....
Oh yes....
I got the creamy coleslaw too!
from left to right- here's Sop That (Joe) Ms Sop That (I'm so sorry I forgot your name) Mr Red Patti (Jeff) Big Glenn's progeny (Shane) and the back of Mar 52's (Marlene) head
and from left to right- Shane, Big Glenn, Red Patti and Mar 52
and
and the whole gang (minus
Moraganen's friend- was it Stephanie I believe?)
Clockwise beginning at noon Mar52 (Marlene) Red Patti (Patti) Mr Elise T (Bob), Elise T, Catasaurus (Pilar) Morganen (Elizabeth), Sop That (Joe) Ms. Sop That, Mr Red Patti (Jeff), Big Glenn's kid (Shane) and Big Glenn
We all had a great time everyone seemed to really enjoy the food, even
Elise T and
Bob who arrived an hour late!
Things got a little confusing as we were saying our goodbyes....Some of us were going to head to
Olvera Street, the oldest block in Los Angeles, now a bonafide tourist spot with Mexican shops, vendors and street performers...I went ahead with
Morganen and her friend and we thought that
Mar52 and
Catasaurus were going to meet us there....We arrived and were looking for Marlene and Pilar but couldn't find them...
I did enjoy a couple of Taquitos...
from
Cielito Lindo
Famous for their avocado sauce
the green avocado sauce actually had more of a cilantro seasoning...
We walked around in 95 degree heat and enjoyed the street carnival atmosphere...
There did appear to be a theme and pre-occupation with skulls
Believe it or not, there was a sign next to this donkey that stated they charge $5 for a photo with "your camera" ....yeah, like I really paid it!
There was even a Mariachi Band
and some really cool break dancing!
and historic Union Station is just across the street
Olvera Street also houses the oldest structure in Los Angeles
And what a surpise look who showed up unexpectedly!
from left to right (
Cecif, Poverty Pete and Buffetbuster)
Oh- wait that's another trip report- right??!!
Unfortunately after strolling around for about 45 minutes or so, we gave up on trying to locate Mar52 and Catasaurus.....
Before dinner, I decided to stroll around nearby
Chinatown
If you read the top of this sign, you may think this must be one helluva hotel!
After my walk around Chinatown I drove to my dinner stop....
Parks BBQ located in
Koreatown, when I got there- Mar52 was there waiting...As it turns out- it would only be the two of us tonight....Glen and his son decided to visit some nearby relatives...But several of us already had plans to meet the next day for dinner...
This was my first experience with Korean BBQ....for more details see
Mar52's great description in the thread provided earlier in Part 3.
Again I'll just provide a quick recap
Each table has a gas grill built into it
the wait staff actually grills the meat...
We decided on...
The Prime Beef
and
The Pork Belly...
The meal starts with a crisp salad in a marinade that doubles as a dipping sauce for the beef
Little side dishes called "banshan" accompany the meal including such exotic delicasies such as tripe and jellyfish
Which we sampled while the beef
and Pork
were on the grill..
here are the finished products
the beef
and the pork belly...
The Beef was tender and earthy, the Pork had a chewier texture and was not fatty at all....
This was a great experience, if you haven't tried Korean BBQ I completely recommend it...
After dinner I drove to Redondo Beach to check into my new hotel- The Ramada...
more tomorrow...
