The Original Pancake House on Beechmont Ave opens this Wednesday at 7 am....

The opening of the Original Pancake House/Beechmont has been pushed back to Monday April 9th.
 
Tried a pizza slice at Five Boroughs Pizza on North Bend today and it was much more to my taste than Noce's - the newly renamed store is owned and run by one of the original  5 partners and he has done a much better job on the crust and overall pizza product.  So much so I got a pie to take home to the wife, who pronounced it on par with Dewey's and Troni's..I would not go that far but it is very good.
 
We also had a pizza pie at Giovanni's Family Italian Restaurante recently (just down from Five Boroughs) and it was pretty good also  - they certainly load it up with cheese and sauce and the crust was quite palatable.  Not as good as Five Boroughs but fairly close..most of their other food our group had, (Spaghetti Bolognese, Eggplant parmesan and spinach lasagna) were not very remarkable, and their appetizers are overpriced and skimpy for the most part (we had the calamari and the portabella mushrooms and scampi).

Not yet but have heard good things about them.

Getting lots of take out from Five Borough today - will report later..

Our take-out order from Five Boroughs Pizzeria on North Bend Rd included a Sicilian pizza with many toppings, buffalo wings, spaghetti with eggplant, spaghetti with marinara sauce, an antipasto, garlic rolls and side salads that went with the spaghetti dishes.  The food was excellent including the pizza - although they forgot our meatballs on my half of the pie which included hot Italian sausage - the crust on the pie was  wider than needed though and the Sicilian pizza comes in a square format with 8 slices as opposed to the larger rectangular Sicilian pizzas I am used to - we had 7 toppings on half of the the pie and sausage and the missing meatballs on the other half - the cost was $18 for the pizza - I enjoyed the Sicilian pie as much as the plain round pie I had gotten the prior week - I recommend the place highly.  Note the Sicilian pie is not on the menu and you need to allow 45 minutes for the dough to rise and the pie to be ready.
 
The salads and the antipasto are very generous and the antipasto is loaded with meats, cheese and green and black olives and peppers and tomatoes and cucumbers - and little lettuce - by far the best antipasto I have seen in SW Ohio and environs.

The Home Place in Georgetown Oh on Rt 68 is now offering smoked baby back ribs on Fridays - these are dry rubbed exquisitely by a Mennonite from TN on site and they are incredible.  

Recently I went looking for info on Kathy's Kitchen in Germantown (entry http://www.roadfood.com/R...iew/517/kathys-kitchen ).  Late last December I tried a place called KJ's Restaurant at 35 W. Center Street, and lo and behold, I learned that was the exact street address of Kathy's Kitchen!  KJ's pretty much had the same fare as was described in the Kathy's link.  It doesn't have a website; it's got a Facebook page, on the other hand.

OK, I went to KJ's today for some pie.  (I would have had lunch there had there not been a BBQ stand on the southern split of OH 4 and OH 725 (south side; it's where the Marathon station is), but I digress!)
 
I asked my waitress there about the change to KJ's from Kathy's Kitchen, and she said it's been KJ's for 2½ years now after a change in ownership.

Digress, please!  My friend in Lebanon (does that make him Lebanese?) often passes through Germantown and every couple of years my trip to his house takes me that way.

Yeah, digress. Does this place have a name? I am interested, too. I can't find anything online.
 
I think you really mean the northern split of OH 4 and OH 725, about 2 miles north of Germantown. Google shows a Marathon station there. The southern split at the eastern edge of Germantown is residential (last I checked.)

Oops, you're right, Don; I meant the NORTHERN split, where OH 4 heads toward Dayton and OH 725 to Miamisburg.

Yes, it was good.  Not "out of this world" good.  (I'll have to go back and sample some other flavors.)

Still Smokin' BBQ on

Where we get it in Montgomery it is usually too well done for our taste so we ask for lightly baked as we get take out and heat it up at home on a pizza stone at 500 degrees for 3 - 4 minutes.
 
The pie we got at their Dayton location was done perfectly.

It is still there but it wouldn't keep us away!  And it is a straight shot back to US Route 35 - more convenient for us  even than to get to Troni's.

We ate at the Original Pancake House's new location on Beechmont Ave  recently.  I was very disappointed with their blueberry pancakes - they were awful, in comparison to what I have eaten at their Montgomery Rd location - the blueberries were yucky and the pancakes were mere shells of what they should have been.
 
The place was packed and the noise volume was horrible.  Our waiter was inattentive to say the least - it had been raining and the floor was wet in spots and I had to call their attention to that so no one might slip on the slick tile floor.  A waiter nearby dropped and broke a salt shaker and made a big mess.
 
They remind me of the new version of IHOP  - a shadow of what they used to be.

The kids were out all day with their mother and her sister, so with time on my hands and a craving for good pizza, I made a another trip up to Troni's to determine once and for all if it is better (imho) than Cosmic Pizza in Hartwell
 
Aside- the Kettering exit off I75 is closed, so it was a pain and a half to find my way there
 
Anyway - although it is nice that Tronis has a good amount of seating, and remains a great pizza I would be thrilled to have in my neighborhood, Cosmic's pizza beats Tronis in every aspect, especially the crust.
 
Not a slam on Tronis at all - I just think Cosmic has a better pizza, which is a great thing for Cincinnati
 
While I was finding my way back, I went past a little open-air hamburger joint called Voltsky's......closed, on a Saturday at mealtime in the summer?  Whats up with that?

Yes, I actually did do Treasure Island a few months ago. It had completely slipped my mind. A couple friends of ours took us there to thank us for helping them move. I'd definitely recommend it.
 
For whatever reason I got the reuben, which is a high-risk item at a non-Irish or German establishment, and I thought it was great. High quality corned beef and good kraut.
 
Cathy got the pork tenderloin, which was as enormous as it was tasty. Very juicy and flavorful.
 
The best thing was the price. Our sandwiches were under $7 (we went for lunch, granted) and we were very full when we left.
 
 
 
 

Anyone tried La Cazuela Mexican Grill on Princeton Road in Fairfield yet? 

Not yet but it is on our agenda. It is a chain so we do not expect that much.

We were in Wilmington yesterday and learned that Stacey's (aka Duff's Buffet) has closed permanently.
