I know it's not really a dessert but you could make caramel squares, basically how I make them is make up a base with digestive biscuits/graham crackers and melted butter and put into a square tin, pour over the caramel, then a layer of melted chocolate and cut them into squares once set:

Not sure if the chocolate condensed milk would work. I think doing the layers w/ thick dark chocolate pudding/pie filling would be almost sure of success.  I would do the carmel bottom, then chocolate layer, then a good layer of whipped cream or topping to 'lighten' the top-side.

Moonlite BBQ down in Owensboro does a chocolate frosting covered pecan pie that reminds me of this.

Maybe it would turn in to fudge?

That wouldn't be a bad thing, would it?

OK, I am trying it again today (Janet returns tomorrow from SoCal). A 3 can batch. However this time in place of the Vanilla extract I will use English Toffee Coffee Flavor syrup. I may use a bit more of the Toffee Syrup to see it it peeks thru the carmel flavoring.

A feedback (no pun) edit will complete this post later tonight.

I made mine this past weekend.  I decided against adding chocolate, even thought I really wanted to.  I figured that I would experience the true taste first.

I kept my coffee pot on with hot water, and I ended up adding about 3 full 12 cup pots throughout the 4 hours.

The pie was fantastic, almost too sweet.  WOW, I don't think I've ever said that before.  I had a can of fat free Whipped Cream, and it seemed the more of that I used, the more balanced the flavor was.  I also crushed up a bag of Emerald Pecan Pie Glazed Pecans.  The nuts really brought it all together.

I will definitely whip this recipe up again.

Also, I did decide how I would add chocolate in the future.

Once the mixture is cool, add a half of a cup of semisweet morsels and fold in.

                  Foodosaurus that sounds fantastic. Pictures?

I'd like to know how the chocolate one comes out.

I won't do it with the batch now on the stove (don't have the pudding here at home), but next time I will make a 'two-can' batch to fill the pie shell then use some Jello Dark Chocolate cook-it style pudding...let it cool a bit then pour it over the carmel-pie layer. After it sets (refrigerated) I have a feeling that it will do what we all have been talking about !  I like the idea of crumbling  praline pecans over it as well !

So many variations, so short a life-span !

Foodosarus, I agree about using the whipped topping to balance the carmel sweetness. Using Tart Apple slices to dip into the warm carmel is another great way to enjoy this treat! When Janet thinned the carmel a bit and poured it over the top of a Marie Calandars Apple Crumb Pie we found another fine dessert!

OK, Here's a Thanksgiving Day update.

Yesterday  one of my grandsons came over to use my kitchen to make his contribution to the family's Holiday feast. He was going to do a Carmel Pie (as described here) and some Brownies.

With a little bit of help from his Grandfather (PawPaw Bowen) Young Chris started two pots of the canned milk on their slow boil to Carmeldom. One pot held 4 cans of the milk (a double-batch according to the recipe) and the other held 6 cans (a triple batch).  We substituted some Butter Pecan Coffee Flavoring syrup for about half of the Vanilla in both batches.

The end result was a large pan of Brownies with a half-inch layer of Carmel for a "frosting", 2 of the Carmel Pies, 2 cereal bowls of the Carmel for use as an Apple Dip in the pre-dinner 'Chip n Dip' mess, and 0ne small Brownie with Carmel for us to test the melding of the dark chocolate and sweet Carmel flavors.  Photos will be added later today.

Chris is 12 years old and takes great pride in his efforts in the kitchen. I think he did a great job on this stuff...and learned a lot about " a watched pot never boils" as we went thru the 4 hours of simmering the cans of milk.!

Photos from the Grandson's Carmel-Making exercise--

The finished product...or some of it. not in photo are one pie and two bowls of Apple-dip.  The KNOB CREEK BOURBON is in the photo to help give a size reference to the finished products, AND to help the Grandfather learn patience working with a Grandson in the kitchen !!

Here are the Brownies... very messy due to warm temp keeping the carmel fairly soft !  But the chocolate and carmel combination is/was outstanding.

Here is the Dessert-Chef showing off his work !

Mayor Al that is fantastic! I would devour both of those (all three I guess if you include the Bourbon )

Loved the pictures of your grandson.  It is so much fun to teach  children and grandchildren how to cook.  My 11 year old granddaugter came home yesterday and decided that she was in the mood to make a cake.  She baked her cake in a sheet pan.  It  came out great BUT  she was in a hurry to eat it  and decided to frost it while it was still too warm.  I told her to wait but she did not follow instructions  and what a mess the cake looked  with frosting mixed in with top of vake.

The good part is that she learned a lesson  and also that her  brother and sister were so  interested in  the novel  frosting crumbed  topping that they gladly ate some.

I made one for thanksgiving to rave reviews!  layered a middle section of Chocolate (12 ozs choc morsels melted in a cup of boiling heavy cream).  Told everyone it was mock - squash pie.................Boy, were they surprised!

Here is a hint I discovered after trying it:

If you want to make a larger pie (to serve more people), instead of the regular 6 oz. graham cracker crust, use the 9 oz. one (that says "two extra servings" on its label) along with 3 cans of sweetened condensed milk, 3 Tbs. butter, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla and the salt, and it will all fit perfectly in the crust!

Even easier, see if you can find this in the Latin section of your grocery store:

The cooking is already done--no worries about boiling/baking cans of condensed milk or anything.

For banoffee pie, it could not be simpler.  Take a prebaked crust (or graham or chocolate cookie--your choice) and place two sliced bananas in the bottom.  Scoop out a can (two if you want it really sweet) of dulce de leche and spread it over the bananas, being sure to fill in the crevices between them.  Whip about a cup of heavy cream with a little sugar and vanilla extract (or maybe try rum extract), and spread that over the pie.  Done!

Thanks for updating  this thread, it brings back some good memories !
We found the carmel pie on a great visit to the Shiloh Battlefield area of Southern Tennessee. When I see an old thread brought back, it triggers a lot of thoughts about that trip and the fun (and Roadfood) we enjoyed.
