The ne plus ultra of hoagies @ Danny's Parkview Pizza? Tue, 11/17/09 1:40 PM (permalink)
I grew up on these, but it was a long time ago, in the late '60s and early '70s. Could they still be the same?

Danny's in South Park, Allegheny County PA (south of Pittsburgh). I got no pictures. I got nothing but the taste of hoagie on my mind. Last weekend, my sister and her husband visited. They came out to drive my dad to Pittsburgh for a friend's birthday party, and they brought back some Danny's hoagies.

Two days after being made, baked, and wrapped... eaten cold... a Danny's is still better than any other hoagie I've ever had. I didn't have my critical goggles on when eating, so I'm a bit hazy. But I'll give my reasons as:

Quality meats. I don't know the brand, but it is a good one. Dang, I can't remember the meats. There's ham and salami, but I can't remember; cappicola?
Sharp cheese. My guess is sharp provolone.
Just the right blend of herbs in the dressing. Oregany, but not overly so.
Awesome roll. Crusty on the outside, soft on the inside. Nothing like it up this way. Wegman's used to get great rolls like this from NYC, but a couple years ago started making them in house.
Just the right amount of L-T-O. Light on the L, medium on the T and O.

Pittsburgh Roadfooders, comment please. Anyone? Buffetbuster?

Do you think their provolone is imported?

I graduated from Baldwin High School in 97. Danny's was maybe 1/2 mile away from the one on Rt 51. Ate there constantly. They got pricey though. Best hoagie in Pgh. Yes, better than the Triangle.

I Grew up in the town of Library which I believe is now called South Park in the 70's and remember Danny's fondly. The best hoagie I have ever had!! In the same area was Freddy's Pizza which had outstanding hoagies too as well as great pizza.  Is Freddy's still around? We also frequented Winky's hamburgers just up the street from Danny's. I believe Winky's was a small local chain but I am not sure. I loved it as a kid but I am sure the memory is better than it really was.

there is a place in pottsville,pa. called farlows.their hoagies(subs) are the best and biggest i've come across in 50 years of hoagie sampling. an italian is $6.50 for a half. the size is about from a man's fingers to elbow bend! all dietz & watson meats and cheeses.rolls brought 3-4 times per week from philly along with philly pretzels and sodas.if you're in the area-check it out. no, i am not a relative but a happy customer.

I last went to a hoagie place in South Park/Bethel in 1970. I think it was next to a drive-in movie that I hear is no longer there. Does anyone know if Danny's Parkview is the same place?

It is. I went to that drive-in in the 80's before they closed :-(

So that's the same thing as Danny's and it is closed now?
Does anyone know a good hoagie place in the Palm Springs desert?

Nah, Danny's is still there, just not the drive-in. A good hoagie in Palm Springs? Just make your own. It'll be easier!
