Taco Burger Lives On

Personally, I bemoan the demise of the full-scale fried burrito that JintheB used to offer, and the fried mini-burritos I enjoyed at Carl's Jr. The perfect item after the bars close.

I hate to think that I'm going to go there and try it.  The article was written in 2006 but I'll give it a go.

They have the world's worst tacos.  They serve soft tacos and they don't even heat up the tortillas.  Hot Sauce/salsa isn't good either.  Their hard shell come out of a box.

But I loved the Bell Burger so I will go there for lunch tomorrow and give it a try.

Then I'll report back.

Henry's is very close to me but I haven't eaten there after trying it once.  They didn't deserve a second try it was that bad.

I did it.  As promised, I ate the taco burger at Henry’s Tacos.
 

 
I was surprised when I got there at 3:30PM.  Most of the tables were full of people eating Henry’s food.
 
I guess there’s a reason why they’ve been in business for so long….  There’s no accounting for taste!
 
The menu at Henry’s is simple.  They have lightly seasoned ground beef mixed with what looked like reconstituted minced onions.
 

 
You can have that ground beef as a soft taco, hard taco, tostada or taco burger.  Same stuff, different wrapper.
 
As I mentioned earlier the taco shells come out of a box and by the looks of it, so do the tortillas for the tostadas.
 

 
 
 
Not sure how (or why) but I finished it.  It was as AWFUL as my picture!
 

 
I was hoping it would bring me back to the memory, taste and enjoyment of the Taco Bell Beef Bell Burger.  (I called them Bell Burgers)
 
I got a bad taste before I ever took a bite.  The taco burger was $2.65 or $3.05 with cheese.  I did not ask for cheese, but they gave it to me and charged me for it. Guess I was supposed to say no cheese.


It was served with a hot sauce/salsa that reminded me of tomato juice mixed with a little Gebhardt's Chili Powder. 

 
It was not spectacular, great, or even good.
 
It was just food.  Perfect for those who eat to live, not live to eat.
 
Can’t get me to go back a third time.
 
 

Growing up in the Midwest there was a chain of restaurants called Taco Tico.  They had the best taco burgers and they also served another delicious item called a chili burrito, a burrito covered with chili.  Here's a link to their menu.

Someone mentions a chili burrito... I used to like the Chili Cheese Burrito when TB was offering them.

mar52 is that an actual burger patty, or is it a scoop of the "taco meat", like a sloppy joe?

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times?...shame on my stomach? Excellent and hilarious. How/Why did you manage to eat it in it's entirety? Do they have fries or chips?

I ate lunch yesterday at 3:30.  I was hungry!

The loose meat sandwich was my entire lunch.  With salsa to be ashamed of they didn't offer chips.  There isn't a raw corn tortilla on the premises or a deep fryer.   There isn't any way for them to make their own chips unless they crumbled the tostada and taco shells. 

Then again the chip crumbs would be the right size for the eye drop sized container of salsa that they give you.

I'd love for another Roadfooder to rate Henry's.  I'm missing why people go back.

M-Looney 56 (BTW Nice Name!!)  There are a few TacoTico's still around in the mid-west. The only one in Indiana is located just a couple of miles from us, in New Albany...and there are two in the Louisville metro area, just across the River. Recently one of those two was featured on a TV report of the growth of Mexican foodstands in the area. It was described as "The return of the major Mexican restaurant chain"!

I would take Sloppy Joe on a burger bun any day of the week. Unless the taco meat is seasoned right its tasteless. You wouldn't find ground beef taco meat in Mexico, so it must have snuck over the boarder for the Gringos................Billyb

They still have one in Dodge City Kansas.  When I was in high school they almost went out of business.  A rumor went around that they were serving dog food instead of ground beef.  It turns out someone saw the delivery truck unloading 50 pound bags of soy protein and flavorings that they added to the beef for flavor and texture.  The local paper ran a story explaining everything, but I know people 30 years later who won't eat there.

why would you indulge in a hamburger and worry about calories and fat? Isn't that the point?

Yeah, but 1,820 calories for a burger? I'd like to actually eat something that day, not get all my calories from one burger. And Applebee's burgers aren't all that great to begin with.

I guess my silly post lives on as well. OK, someone writes about a Mex-shop that was nearly killed by the old canned dog food in the tacos nonsense. I recall the same thing happening at a place in Dallas (ca. 1970) that still has several locations, it's not El Fenix, it's maybe El Chico or something like that. It's a Mexican cafeteria style operation, you push your plate along and tell 'em what you want. They do this cute thing where when you are settled at your table, and are ready to take on board some more stuff, you raise a miniature Mex-flag on a mini flagpole, and a "server" drags their booty over to see what you want. I kinda liked the place. Had good belly-bomb sopapillas, too. Those you took home with you, where you could abuse yourself and cry about it later. And later.

I got a Chimichanga plate at a local Mex place here in SoIndiana last week. They asked me if I wanted Beef or Chicken...Then when I requested Beef, I was given the choice of ground or chipped Beef. I went for the Chipped...BAD CHOICE ! The meat was the typical Chipped beef one gets in the Armour Brand glass bottle. VERY SALTY ! It was in a red chili sauce that was ok, but the SALT remained and really wrecked the flavor.
  Next time it will be the ground beef, and we'll see if they treat it the same way!

  For $8.95 I got two medium sized Chimis with a dollop of Guccamole on top of each, a plate with warm tortillas(foil-wrapped) beans, rice, and some chopped lettuce.
 
  I don't know if the choice of ground or chipped Beef is a standard at this place or not, We usually get the Fajitas plate. It is a buck cheaper and includes a 12 oz draft Amber Boch. It is always served sizzling hot with all of the sides mentioned for the other plate.  A real good dinner for me

At one time, back in the 70s, Del Taco made a great Taco Burger topped w/ green chiles. Then they stoped making them. Then they moved out of my area. :~(

I stopped by the Las Vegas location, on tha strip, but no burger w/ green chiles on the menu. :~(((

Anyone but me remember these green chile taco burgers from Del Taco?

Most Del Tacos will make the Bun Taco on request (not sure if they include the green chills anymore) however the thing is WAY over priced. $2.50 - $3.00 for the tiny little thing is obscene when they'll sell you a couple of tacos and the buns for a buck. Needless to say I was very disappointed. Next time I get that overwhelming craving I'll just have to make my own.

I used to go to a Mexican stand on Figueroa near USC just west of downtown L.A. that made what they called a "hamburguesa". Burger bun, ground beef taco meat, lettuce, onions and hot sauce. It was great!
