I get by quite well with Waffle House, McDonald's and, oh, I guess any place where you can buy a cup of coffee.

Yeah, if I went there, I could get by on hot water  coffee too...

Michael, ironically   the way you feel about traditional coffee houses (yeah, the "trend" is now a quarter of a century old)  is the same way I now  feel about "third wave" or "pourover" coffee....it's a totally different realm...

Bumped thread- to really annoy the hell out of those  who don't "get" good quality coffee

          also
          Added:

          Cool Beans International- Oradell NJ

Also added an addendum for coffee houses that don't quite make the best of list.
Again- these are alternatives to the dreaded, horrific Mc$tarbuck$

I had to look up third wave and pourover. And now that I have I am lost.

Of course, me being lost is pretty much standard.

Ah. I've recently started doing theater reviews next door at the Little Firehouse Theater; I'll have to give them a try after the show.

I am not a coffee person; a good cup of Folgers with milk( gasp!) I was recently trained in the Starbucks in our Target, and simply said no way...I have no interest. While I caught on very well.....have no interest in " I want Blonde roast with chai, blah, blah, blah...". But good for you that do!However, when tired-my co workers give me a shot of espresso, THAT I can do.

Though it's been a while since I've been there, the Espresso Royale on Main st in Ann Arbor.

There also used to be another coffee house around the block on Maynard street I think, the name escapes me right now, but they made something called a "French-Vietnamese" which was brewed with coffee, chicory, and had condensed milk in it.  Wonderful.  Haven't seen it anywhere else.

A quick update on Ruta Maya, apparantly they closed for a time but have now reopened on south First street. Also they're selling Ruta Maya coffee at Costco.

If you ever swing through Charlottesville, Shenandoah Joe is the hot spot here.

But my favorite is Trager Bros. to our south in Nelson County. They grind, brew and serve in a gorrgous location.

I've not been to Fido in Nashville but its mothership Bongo Java was a favorite when I was at Belmont U. The first "fancy coffee" I ever had.

IF favorite was measred by volume, I'd say a toss up between Dunkin Doughnuts and 7-11. But, I prefer Starbucks, as I enjoy the bitter and ultra-caffeine of their dark roasts. But, when I've been out West, I really enjoy Peets, especially the one in Freemont neighborhood of Seattle. Sadly, no Peets Coffee houses in this area. Although, I hear the Caribou's are being rebranded as Peets, since Peets purchased Caribou. And, I like Caribou - it's like Starbucks without the Starbuck culture of ordering coffee in lingo.

We had two nearby Caribous. One just outright closed and the otheer will be rebranded as Peet's. Apparently in no hurry, they have said the rebranding may take a year. The closing of the one was kind of a surprise, it was in a very good visible location and easily accessible to a very busy road, it was always busy.

Peet's is a west coast company and Caribou started in Minneapolis. Peet's didn't buy Caribou. A German company bought both Peet's and Caribou. They evidently decided Peet's had a better brand name. Caribou always emitted a northwoods cabin atmosphere that probably doesn't relate well nationwide but did relate well in its root start in Minnesota. The Washington DC Caribous will be rebranded to Peet's. The Twin Cities Caribous will stay Caribou. They are also closing several non-performing or for various other reasons shops nationwide. There are over 80 Caribous in the Twin Cities and most all will stay open.

I didn't realize until just recently or I just didn't think it significant but I started taking my daily coffee break at the first Caribou in 1992 and did so for several years.

I enjoy Tully's also. Finally saw some K-cups at Randall's, other than that only had Tully's at Sea-Tac.

I just returned from an extended weekend trip to Seattle.
I went to 8 different coffee houses including the regional chain Tully's.
I will be adding to my list when I find some time..

I didn't realize until just recently or I just didn't think it significant but I started taking my daily coffee break at the first Caribou in 1992 and did so for several years.

Was the first one the one on France down the road from Convention Grill?  I used to go to that one a lot from 1995 to 1997.  After that, I was mostly a Dunn Bros guy (I practically lived in the 6th and University Dunn Bros in 1998 and 1999, since my phone, and later my airport router, reached there from my apartment)

I thought the first Caribou was in the Gaviidae Center downtown Minneapolis. If not the first, it was the first downtown the year they started up.

Dunn Bros. is still viable in the Twin Cities. Most are franchised independent operations but the one signature thing they do is roast on premises. We have a nice Dunn Bros. in Excelsior, MN with a live music venue.

The Bipartisan Cafe in Portland is a favorite. Good pie, political posters as decoration. Can't be beat.
