The poll on potatoes

I think this is most difficult to answer.  My choice of potato depends on what I am  eating.  If I am having meatloaf,  mashed potatoes are the what I want.  With a  steak, I  want a baked potato  and  the only time I would eat French fires is with a hamburger or  fried fish.

Greymo, that's the first thing I thought of too.It DOES depend on what you're eating.Fries,which I love,go best with burgers and dogs, but sometimes,you're just in a mood for them...They do go great with a steak(steak fries) even if baked is preferable to me...and yes,mashed and gravy with meatloaf..but of the three,I voted for fries because they seem.to me,the most versitile...and,hell,Fries are good anytime!

Hot Roast Beef sandwich with mashed is great, but sometimes I order ff with beef gravy, with the sandwich.
Potatoes Au Gratin, always good with everything, especially fish, for some reason!

This question is too ambiguous!
I like all of the above.The type of potatoes I like depends on what I'm having with them.
If it's meatloaf or roast turkey, it's mashed!
If it's a Burger or Hot Dog or other sandwiches like a Club, it's fries.
If it's a steak, it's baked.
If its an open-faced roast beef sandwich with gravy, it could be either mashed or fries.
If it's eggs and sausage or CFS or Corned Beef Hash, it's Hash Browns or Home Fries. (You forgot them on the list)
 
Point being, I never met a potato I didn't like! 
 

What about potato salad?  (Good with almost anything when the weather is warm, and good with many types of sandwiches any time!)

Kugel is my sleeper pick...in the potato bracket.

Not easy to find or trendy. Rich in history ethnic tradition and mighty fine when you find a good kugel.

When we lived in the Virgin Islands -- the U.S. Virgin Islands -- the standard side with a hambuger was  mashed potatoes with peas, or, as they were called, peas and mash (pronounced mosh).

As far as a baked potato...I don't know many unloaded to the hilt baked potatoes out there that will tell you something about where you might be in terms of Roadfood.

On ocassion Baked with a buger is pretty good. Used to do that with the Bully Buger when I was in San Diego.

You guys have already said pretty much what I thought, although I would not turn down a potato, ever. Home fries in the am, baked potato any other time. Have to be in the mood for mashed potatoes. And if you make them with milk, shame on you. Half and half is where it's at!

I find mashed potatoes, with a little garlic.... to be oddly comforting. like macaroni and cheese or tomato soup. I am only rarely in the mood for a baked potato, and send me a plate of hash browns or sweet potato fries anytime!

Did anyone see the Wendy's commercial for "hand cut" fries with sea salt?  They really look good.  Then you get to the restaurant and they're probably limp.
