Not neccesarily Roadfood but we have great Mexican places all around here.

There's many ways to interpret the term "Roadfood"...

If I'm "on the road" (driving) and I eat someplace, I guess technically it's "roadfood"...  where I find food while on the road...

What I like about Southern California IS the large number of Mexican places to eat...I could probably spend 10 years eating at places down there and never eat at the same place twice...

Time to start doing research about places to eat from SLO to San Jose...

      Eureka...(I found it)...!!!
      Sort of...

At some point I was mentioning chocolate dipped hard pack ice cream cones, but couldn't remember where...

I found chocolate dipped hard pack ice cream cones at the Baskin-Robbins in Ukiah tonight right next to beloved US Hwy 101 (Perkins St Exit)...

      Was this the ultimate...???

      No...

The chocolate developed a wax consistancy after chewing it a bit...not even close to the chocolate dip at Fosters, or the store bought version by Hershey (which to me has a butter flavor nuance)...

BTW...Santa Rosa (CA) has THREE Fosters Freeze locations...compared to the boonies I live in Santa Rosa IS a "big city"  (100,000 population in the general area)...I used to be an egg rancher down there many years ago, and today was the 1st time down there in many months...

            Hi Elise...

I was just in your town on a train trip...

            What suggestions do you have...???

I had a crappy meal at a place in downtown LA, that others suggested...I'll write about it later, after I've bounced back from my "train-lag"...

BTW...I really enjoyed the archetectural features of Union Station...WOW...!!!

Well, I havn't read through the whole shebang, but I see some people recommending Long Beach. Would the trip start in LA? Would you want a few days in LA to hit say, south LA, or just places that are near the freeway like Apple Pan? I'm going to make a map for the LA area.

How many people are we looking at? Maybe camping spots and cheap motels scouted by locals?

I took the trip on Amtrak and wasn't happy.

Maybe aim for the end of April?

In Santa Barbara definitely La Super Rica, and Jocko's in Nipomo.

If this is a double post, sorry. I don;t see my post.

If we spent an overnite in LA we could hit South LA or Pasadena, or the valley. Otherwise we could meet up and follow the coast up the 101 and eat at places on the way. Here is a tentative itinerary, eating at places that are close to the road.

Meet at Phillipes, walk over to Olvera Street for Churros.

                110 south to 10 west.

Apple Pan for burgers and apple pie

stop at the ocean to see the Santa Monica pier, (clam chowder and fish and chips at the Kings Head if you're peckish).

Up the 101. Stop at county line at Neptunes Net

Dinner and sleep in Ventura (Maybe Landmark 77 a steak place and one of our haunted restaurants).

I just discovered I need to be in San Francisco on April 11. Is anyone married to it being later?

Sat April 7, driving day, dinner for those who arrive to spend the night (sushi? Mexican?)
                  Sunday April 8 Phillipes--Apple Pan--Santa Monica Pier--Neptunes Net-- Ventura
Overnite in Ventura or Santa Barbara
Mon 4/9-- breakfast -- la super rica --
                                               Overnite in Morro Bay
Tues   4/10                   Overnite in San Francisco?

Does that work for everyone? You could then atay overnite in 11th Ukiah--12th Portland--13th south seattle--14th seattle

It's too bad this thread got sidetracked. I'm going to head up the coast anyways hitting ventura and Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Tuesday night in Morro bay and up to San Francisco Wednesday if anyone wants to plan meet-ups.

                      Hi Elise...

                      Are you back yet...???

I've been SO busy on the days it hasn't been raining, and stuck indoors on the days it has rained...

Tomorrow morning I'm off to Nevada City, then off NW Nevada for a video shoot, Then Sunday I do my annual railroad safety training and exam, and then back home for a few hours sleep, that go north to the radio station to recdord an interview that will air later in the week for one of my radio shows...

This will most likely be the lasy year I do railroad work..

Several weeks from now I have a road trip to Gilroy...My friend Gilbert Klein wrote a book about the late KFAT-FM (Gilroy - the FCC callsign KFAT is now up in Alaska and has nothing to do with the pioneering radio that was done in Gilroy)...

The book is called Fat Chance, and will be out in a few weeks and the Gilroy Chamber Of Commerce is planning some kind of wingding in celebration...

Maybe this FALL I can do the entire UDS Hwy 101 roadtrip...

Yes--Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach has some of the best clam chowder you'll ever have!

While you're in Pismo Beach, be sure to stop by Old West Cinnamon Rolls, too.  They're awesome. (I like the original best, but they have many varieties.) 861 Dolliver Street

Uh oh--guess I was late.  But next time maybe...

Pismo Beach: Splash Cafe's for their onion rings & bread bowl clam chowder, The Cracked Crab for their bucket (on the table cracking) and fish tacos, Honeymoon Cafe for their breakfast, Giuseppe's Express Deli for a beach picnic, and
Avila Beach: Joe Mama's coffee, Woodstone Marketplace (Monday - prime rib night!), and The Avila Valley Barn for olallieberry tarts.
San Luis Obispo: Another outpost of Splash Cafe that is great for breakfast, San Luis Fish and BBQ for their halibut and chips (not sure what the BBQ part is), New Frontiers for juicing, Madonna Inn for their hash, Spirit of San Luis at the Airport for their burger, Petra's ironically for their pepperoni pizza, Breakfast Buzz for all day breakfast, and Blue Sky for their beignets.
Oceano: Old Juan's Cantina for some yummy mexican before or after you drive on the beach.

Colors are showing along Hwy 101 now north of Willits...but with the soaking rains we just had, leaves might start falling soon...

While we have prolific yellows and orages, most of the red & scarlet colors come from the Poison Oak, which can range from a small twig, clump, bush, to tree climbers...

I spent some time yesterday with my pocket camera and went up the road to Hearst, 15 miles east of Willits to the base of the Yolla Bolly Mtn Wilderness area, and as the cloud cap dissapated I was able to get a shot of snow covered Anthony Peak (7,000') from the foothills...

As always, I'd rather drive the backroads with my cameras and a good appetite for small-time restaurants & cafe's...

Gosh...looks like I've not been here for a while...I'm as busy as a flea at a dog show....

Right now my car needs a new front driveshaft...

I look forward to hitting the road when the rainy season we're not getting is over...
