Re:Cheese Steak Tue, 08/21/12 12:24 PM (permalink)
My former mother-in-law (originally from Duluth, MN) was with us at a steak shop (it's a STEAK SHOP, people - not a "Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich or SAMMICH Shop" - shiver!!!), and she ordered a "Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich". I wanted to crawl under the table, but due to her advanced age (this was in the late 80s, and she's still around! 92!), I took the high road.

    Hi Harriet!

When my mother went to Denmark she was instructed NOT to order a Danish.

    I understand!

And what would they call a Danish in Denmark?  I had a business acquainance from England make his first visit to the U.S. a few years ago, and he was very into all aspects of the culture. Including, he had a great time in supermarkets, looking at everything.  He picked up a package of English Muffins and laughed and put it down again.  We were moving too fast to ask him why.  Do they even have them over there?

A Danish in Denmark is a Wienerbrød.

Living in Philadelphia the first thing I notice is the half on the left the roll is soaked with grease until it turned brown.... this is unsat for a cheesesteak and would be inedible for me and banishment to the establishment that cooked and served such a sandwich.

The establishment is in New Jersey. Can't banish them.

Our best "Cheesesteak" is from a nice Roadfood place in <<<Hoboken>>> called Piccolo's Clam Bar (no longer a Clam Bar) and it's not a Philly Cheesesteak. It's a "Jersey Steak"...with cheese.

Little bit of Cheesesteak ettiquette from a Philadelphian.
First of no self respecting Steak shop would ever call it a "Philly Cheesesteak" because Philadelphians already know the cheesesteak originated in Philadelphia.
If it has Philly or any other name in front of Cheesesteak I will walk right on by.

              Jersey Steak?
              No such thing!

There's a Jersey steak in Hoboken...and it's much better than some of the versions in Philadelphia.

I think the best cheesesteaks are actually in south jersey. I hate whiz except on a cheesesteak and pat's geno's and Jim's all suck. Tourist traps. The roast pork sandwiches in Philly are great along with the soft pretzels. But finding a great cheesesteak is like trying to find a great slice of pizza in Manhattan. Few and far between

Do not mislead, Jim's South Street is a Tourist Trap, however Jim's Steaks at 62nd and Noble in West Philadelphia is the original Jim's location and nothing like South Street.
Do not lump them all together. While they are the same owners the Jim's West Philadelphia has a grill that has been cooking steaks since the 1940's.
A Grill such as this is seasoned over the course of 70 years.... you cannot get that anywhere in Philadelphia because only Philadelphia has steak joints that have been opened that long and if people think the grill means nothing than that person has never had a good steak.
If you did not know of Jim's West Philadelphia it is obvious one would be a rookie.

So it is going to be like that, huh?  New posters need to have a certain amount of posts (either 20 or 30) to be able to attach links.  So, through no fault of your own, you can't post links, yet.  I was sincerely trying to be helpful.

You sir are the ignorant one. Even though you put a link in a message to be posted and you have not been on here long enough, when you hit the post button, the computer system will automatically remove your link, that you THINK you're posting, before it puts your message on the forum. It's done that way to prevent spammers from posting self promoting links on the web site. If you haven't read the rules, http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/Rules-of-Conduct-PLEASE-READ-m69391.aspx
                                I suggest you do so.

                                  Jim's West Philadelphia Facebook page.

Surprise! I was born and raised in Philadelphia, and I never heard of Jim's in West Philadelphia. Why? Because it's a huge city. I'm not from West Philadelphia, and the fact that the grill, griddle or whatever the h*ll you want to call it is "seasoned" (a/k/a/ not scraped and probably filthy dirty - so I guess that gives the food credibility) makes the rest of us rookies...well, I'll just stop that sentence right here.
Rookie? I think not. And don't be self-promoting with the Facebook pages. If we want to see it, we'll find it ourselves. But thanks, BB.

I'm so sick of these nasty attitudes from rookies. You make my home town look bad, so just stop.

That's a good looking cheesesteak in the original post.  However, I couldn't imagine being in Ocean City and going anywhere but Voltaco's for any kind of sandwich.  I dream about that place during the cold winter months.

Here is a hoagie or sub from Voltaco's.
